Even harm cannot touch you without His wise permission
Ad-Darr: why harm happens only by His decree, and why that is a comfort
Who He is as Ad-Darr
Ad-Darr is in the well-known list in Jami' al-Tirmidhi, and scholars stress that it must never be said alone. It is said as Ad-Darr An-Nafi', because together the two names mean that Allah alone controls harm and benefit. The Quran: if Allah touches you with harm, no one can remove it except Him, and if He touches you with good, He has power over all things (6:17).
Harm is never His aim for its own sake. In his opening prayer the Prophet ﷺ said to Allah: all good is in Your hands, and evil is not attributed to You (Sahih Muslim). Allah creates the hardship, but what He intends through it is good: to test, to purify, to raise a rank, to wake a heart, or to protect from something worse. A surgeon cuts, but no one calls the surgeon cruel.
We tend to blame the people around us: the mechanic, the doctor, the boss. They are only means. The One who truly tests and gives, takes and benefits is Allah. Unlike a person who harms out of malice, weakness or loss of temper, He decrees hardship with complete knowledge and with mercy built into it.
Where you see Ad-Darr at work
Listen to how the prophets spoke. Ayyub, after years of illness, did not say You struck me. He said: harm has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful (21:83). Ibrahim said: when I am ill, it is He who cures me (26:80), speaking of the illness as his and the cure as Allah's. Khidr said of the damaged boat, I intended it, but of the treasure saved for the orphans, your Lord intended it (18:79, 18:82). Even the jinn said: we do not know whether harm is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends good for them (72:10).
A virus too small to see once brought the whole world to its knees and locked people in their homes. All our technology could not stop it. It was a reminder of how needy we are, and of who alone removes harm.
Handing your affairs to Him
The Prophet ﷺ told the young Ibn Abbas that if the whole nation gathered to harm him, they could not harm him except with something Allah had already written (Jami' al-Tirmidhi). You can stop living in fear of people. Their plans pass through His permission first.
When harm does come, the believer has a way through it. The Prophet ﷺ said that the affair of the believer is all good: if hardship comes and he is patient, that is good for him (Sahih Muslim). Take the medicine, see the doctor, make the plan. But seeking to lift harm through charms, fortune-tellers or begging the powerful goes to doors that hold nothing. If Allah touches you with harm, there is no remover of it except Him (10:107).
The consultant steps into the corridor and says the scan shows more than they hoped. Your legs go weak, and you sit down on the plastic chair. No harm moves one step further than Allah permits, and no cure arrives without Him. Say what Ayyub said: harm has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.
When harm comes, I feel the world is chaotic and I am at the mercy of people and chance.
No harm reaches me except by Allah's wise permission, and only He removes it, so I turn to Him first.
Why the heart loves Him for it
Ayyub's words show what this name does to a believing heart. In the middle of pain, he called Allah the Most Merciful. When you know that even your hardship passes through the hands of the Most Merciful, the heart turns to Him instead of away from Him. And the One who allowed the harm is the only One who can heal it, so the heart runs to Him.
O Allah, You are Ad-Darr and An-Nafi'. Remove from me the harm that has touched me, protect me from what I fear, and do not let any hardship turn my heart away from You.
Call on Him by both names together, never one alone, in illness, fear or loss, asking the only One who can remove harm (6:17).When something goes wrong today, speak about it the way Ayyub did: name the hardship, then name Allah's mercy.
- النَّافِعُAn-Nafi'He alone allows harm and He alone brings benefit; the two names are always said together.
- اَلْمَانِعُAl-Mani'The One who permits a harm is the One who prevents countless others before they reach you.
- الرَّحِيمُAr-RaheemHardship from Him is wrapped in mercy, which is why Ayyub called Him the Most Merciful in his pain.
