الْمُحْصِي

Al-Muhsi · The All-Enumerating, The Counter

Al-Muhsi (الْمُحْصِي) means the All-Counting, the Enumerator: the One who has counted every created thing, every breath, raindrop and deed, precisely and without error or forgetting. It means no good you do is ever too small to be kept, and no wrong done to you slips off the record.

Rootح ص يHasa means pebbles. The Arabs once counted with small stones, laying one down for each item, so ihsa' came to mean counting something completely, one by one, until nothing is left out. Al-Muhsi counts every single thing in creation, individually, with nothing missed.

Who He is as Al-Muhsi

Al-Muhsi has counted all things in number (72:28). Not roughly, not by category, but one by one: every grain of sand, every drop of rain, every heartbeat of every creature that ever lived. He does not estimate. He knows the exact count of everything. He has enumerated them and counted them a full counting (19:94).

This name sits inside Al-Alim, His all-embracing knowledge, but it adds precision. Al-Alim knows everything; Al-Muhsi knows the exact number and detail of every individual thing. It also stands beside Al-Hasib, the Reckoner: Al-Muhsi keeps the full record, and Al-Hasib brings it to account and is enough for His servants.

There is a striking contrast in the Quran. If you tried to count the blessings of Allah, you could never enumerate them (14:34, 16:18). The same verb is used. We cannot count His gifts to us, yet He counts every deed of ours. Our counting fails at the first step; His never fails at all.

Where you see Al-Muhsi at work

Everything is recorded: all things We have enumerated in writing (78:29), in a clear register (36:12). On the Day of Judgement people will open their book and say: what kind of book is this that leaves out nothing small or great, but has counted it (18:49)? They will find everything they did present before them.

Allah will raise them all and tell them what they did. He counted it, while they forgot it (58:6). We forget what we said last week. He has kept every word of every year.

The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has ninety-nine names, and whoever ahsaha them will enter Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). The verb is from this same root. Scholars explain it as learning them, understanding them and living by them. The One who counts everything invites us to count, and treasure, His names.

Handing your affairs to Him

Much of our discouragement is the feeling that our effort disappears. You were patient with a difficult parent, you swallowed an insult, you gave quietly, and nothing seemed to come of it. Al-Muhsi counted every one. Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it (99:7). Nothing you do for Him is ever too small to be kept.

It also lifts the burden of keeping score with people. You do not need to remember every slight or keep a tally of who owes you. Al-Muhsi keeps the record perfectly. You can forgive, move on and let Him hold the account.

And it keeps you honest about the small wrongs. Thinking a glance, a white lie or a careless word does not count is how the record fills up unnoticed. An atom's weight of harm will also be seen (99:8). Counting your own deeds now, gently and honestly, is better than being surprised by them later.

It is payday, and after rent and bills there is almost nothing left. You still put a few coins in the charity box on your way home, embarrassed at how little it is. Al-Muhsi counted it exactly, and the sincerity behind it too. Walk home lighter; nothing given for Him is too small to be kept.

My small efforts are so tiny they do not really make a difference.

Al-Muhsi counts every single deed, so even an atom of good I do is kept.

Why the heart loves Him for it

There is tenderness in being counted. A mother knows how many children she has and notices if one is missing. Al-Muhsi knows each one of His servants by name and number. You are not a statistic to Him; you are counted individually.

And when you realise you cannot even count His blessings, while He carefully counts every small good you do, gratitude turns into love.

Call on Him

Ya Muhsi, You have counted my every deed while I forgot them. Count my small good with mercy, erase my wrongs, and let me never belittle a kindness.

Call on Him by this name when your efforts feel worthless or when you review your day, remembering that He has counted all things in number (72:28).
Try this today

Tonight, before you sleep, count three blessings from today and one small good you did, and thank Al-Muhsi for both.
