الْمُحْيِي

Al-Muhyi · The Giver of life

Al-Muhyi (الْمُحْيِي) means The Giver of Life: the One who gives life to a lifeless drop and makes it a living person, revives dead land with rain, brings hearts to life with faith, and will raise the dead. Every heartbeat you have is His gift. And no part of you, or your faith, is too dead for Him to revive.

Rootح ي يHayah is life, and ihya' is to give life or revive. It is the same root as Al-Hayy, the Ever-Living. He is living in Himself, and from that perfect life He gives life to others. The word is also used for reviving land, and for a heart coming alive.

Al-Muhyi in the Quran

Say, [O Muhammad], "O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death." So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him that you may be guided.

  2. وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ نُحۡيِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَٰرِثُونَ

And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.

So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah - how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, that [same one] will give life to the dead, and He is over all things competent.

His is the dominion of the heavens and earth. He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent.

Who He is as Al-Muhyi

Life is the one thing no laboratory can produce. Science can describe the parts of a body in detail, yet give a scientist flesh and bone and ask for a living person, and nothing can be done. Al-Muhyi is the only Giver of life: He proportions the body and then breathes the soul into it (15:29), a thing whose reality He has kept mostly hidden from us (17:85).

His giving life flows from His own life. He is Al-Hayy, the Ever-Living who never dies, and all His actions, giving, protecting, sustaining, come from that perfect life. Whatever lives, lives because He gives it life at every moment.

The Quran uses this name for three kinds of life. The body in the womb. The earth after rain. And the heart: is one who was dead, then We gave him life and a light to walk by among people, like one stuck in darkness (6:122)? Faith is called life, and its absence is called death.

Where you see Al-Muhyi at work

A man passed a ruined town and wondered how Allah could ever bring it back to life. Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him. His food had not spoiled, but his donkey had turned to bones, and he watched them being assembled and clothed with flesh. His words afterwards: I know that Allah has power over all things (2:259). Right after, Ibrahim asked to see how Allah gives life to the dead, not from doubt but so that his heart would be at rest (2:260).

You can watch the same sign every year. Look at the traces of Allah's mercy: how He gives life to the earth after its death; that same One will give life to the dead (30:50). And in Surah al-Hadid, straight after warning believers not to let their hearts harden, Allah says: know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death (57:16-17). The message to a hard heart is: rain is coming.

Handing your affairs to Him

Some seasons of faith feel like winter ground. You pray and feel nothing. The Quran that once moved you sits on the shelf. You conclude that something in you has died for good. Al-Muhyi revives land that looked like it would never grow again. Keep the small seeds in the ground, a little Quran, a little dhikr, a dua, and ask Him for rain.

The same hope applies to a child who has drifted, a friend who has lost faith, a marriage that feels lifeless. You cannot breathe life into anything. He can, and He responds to those who ask. Respond to Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to what gives you life (8:24).

You are sitting in the car outside the mosque, engine off, unable to make yourself go in because it has felt empty for months. Al-Muhyi brings dead ground to life after rain. Go in anyway, pray two rak'ahs, and ask Him for the rain your heart needs.

When my faith feels dead, I assume it is over for me.

Al-Muhyi revives dead land and dead hearts, so I keep planting and ask Him for rain.

Why the heart loves Him for it

Every morning you did not choose to wake up; your life was handed back to you. Each breath is a fresh gift from Al-Muhyi, given without asking. The heart that notices this cannot help but love the One who keeps giving it life.

Call on Him

Ya Muhyi, You give life to the earth after its death. Give life to my heart with faith and Your remembrance, and do not let it harden.

Call on Him by this name when your heart feels hard or empty, and for anyone whose faith you long to see revived.

What is the difference between Al-Hayy and Al-Muhyi?
