الْقَهَّارُ

Al-Qahhar · The Subduer

Al-Qahhar (الْقَهَّارُ) means The Subduer, the All-Prevailing: the One who overpowers every creature, before whom all strength yields, and whose will no one can push back. In the Quran it always comes with Al-Wahid, the One. For the oppressed it is a promise: no tyrant is beyond Him, and no hardship can resist Him.

Rootق ه رQahr means to overpower and subdue, to take control of someone or something so it yields completely, with no ability to resist. The form qahhar is intensive: one who subdues totally, constantly and over everything. Al-Qahir and Al-Qahhar both come from it; the second adds fullness and repetition.

Al-Qahhar in the Quran

Say, "Who is Lord of the heavens and earth?" Say, "Allah." Say, "Have you then taken besides Him allies not possessing [even] for themselves any benefit or any harm?" Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Or is darkness equivalent to light? Or have they attributed to Allah partners who created like His creation so that the creation [of each] seemed similar to them?" Say, "Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Prevailing."

One power over every power, and none can share it

Al-Qahhar: the Subduer before whom every force and every tyrant yields

Why the Quran always says the One, the Subduer
Many powerscancel each other outno one truly prevails
but
One Subduerno rival, no balanceHis word is final
so
Nothing outranks Himnot tyrants, not deathnot your hardship
The power you fear most
This force has the last wordthe regime, the illness, the bully
Al-Qahhar shows
It is subdued like everything elseonly His word is final

Who He is as Al-Qahhar

Every one of the six times Al-Qahhar appears in the Quran, it is joined to Al-Wahid: Allah, the One, the All-Prevailing (12:39, 13:16, 14:48, 38:65, 39:4, 40:16). The pairing is the point. If many hold power, power balances power and no one truly prevails. Because He is One, His subduing is total: there is no rival, no stalemate, no court of appeal above Him.

Every creature is subdued to Him whether it knows it or not. The heartbeat, gravity, the aging of cells, the timing of death: the most arrogant person on earth obeys these without being asked. He is the Subduer over His servants, who sends guardians over them until death arrives (6:61). This is not cruelty. It is reality, and scholars always mention such names together with His wisdom and mercy, as in 6:18, where He is the Subduer and also the Wise, the All-Aware.

Al-Qahhar differs from Al-Jabbar. Both describe overwhelming power, but Al-Qahhar is pure prevailing: every force yields and is held down. Al-Jabbar adds the healer's meaning of setting things right. And it differs from Al-Aziz, which stresses that He cannot be reached or defeated; Al-Qahhar stresses that He actively overpowers all else.

Where you see Al-Qahhar at work

Yusuf, a young man unjustly locked in prison, asked his two cellmates a simple question: are many separate lords better, or Allah, the One, the All-Prevailing (12:39)? He had no power at all, and yet he was calm, because he knew who actually ruled the prison, the palace and the people in both.

Death is the clearest sign of this name. Kings with armies, billionaires with private doctors, and the poorest person in a refugee camp all meet it the same way, unable to delay it by a breath. And the Quran describes the Day when the earth is replaced, and all creatures stand before Allah, the One, the All-Prevailing (14:48), and the question is asked: whose is the kingdom today (40:16)? Every oppressor who once seemed untouchable will stand there with nothing.

Handing your affairs to Him

If Allah touches you with harm, no one can remove it but Him, and if He touches you with good, He has power over all things; He is the Subduer over His servants (6:17-18). Read that as relief. The debt, the illness, the court case and the person making your life miserable are all subdued beneath Al-Qahhar. Not one of them has the last word.

Why then does it not end now? Because the same verse calls Him the Wise. He sets the timing, and sometimes the wait is long: Ibrahim waited decades for a child, Ayyub endured years of illness. Impatience reads delay as weakness. Al-Qahhar is not unable; He is wise, and the end belongs to those who stay patient and mindful of Him.

You watch footage of people suffering under a cruel power and feel sick with helplessness. You cannot fix it from your sofa. But that power is subdued, like every power, beneath the One, the All-Prevailing. Make sincere dua for them, give what you can, and remember that the Day of 14:48 is coming.

Some powers in this world are simply too big to be stopped.

Every power is subdued beneath Al-Qahhar; only His word is final, and His timing is wise.

Why the heart loves Him for it

The weak need a protector stronger than every threat. Al-Qahhar is exactly that, and He is on the side of the patient and the wronged. The heart loves Him because His overwhelming power means that in the end no injustice goes unanswered, and no believer is left at the mercy of a bully.

Call on Him

Ya Qahhar, Ya Wahid, every force bows to You. Subdue what is overpowering me, subdue my own harmful desires, and let no oppressor have power over me except what You allow in wisdom.

Call on Al-Qahhar when you are facing a force far stronger than you, and remember 6:17-18: none removes harm but Him.
Try this today

When you feel helpless about a situation today, say: there is no god but Allah, the One, the All-Prevailing, and then do the one small thing within your reach.

Questions about Al-Qahhar

What does Al-Qahhar mean?

Al-Qahhar means the Subduer or the All-Prevailing. It describes Allah as the One who overpowers every creature completely and constantly, so that nothing can resist His will. Even those who deny Him are subject to His laws in their bodies, their lives and their deaths.

How many times is Al-Qahhar in the Quran?

Al-Qahhar appears six times, always paired with Al-Wahid, the One: 12:39, 13:16, 14:48, 38:65, 39:4 and 40:16. The related form Al-Qahir appears in 6:18 and 6:61, describing Him as the Subduer over His servants.

Why is Al-Qahhar always paired with Al-Wahid?

Because true, total prevailing is only possible for one who has no rival. Where many share power, they limit each other. Since Allah is One, His subduing is absolute, which is also an argument against worshipping anything besides Him, as Yusuf told his cellmates in 12:39.

Should Al-Qahhar make me afraid of Allah?

It should give healthy awe and real comfort. It means no oppressor, illness or hardship is beyond His control. The Quran pairs His overpowering with His wisdom (6:18), and the believer reads it as a promise that injustice will be answered and help will come at the right time.
