الْقُدُّوسُ

Al-Quddus · The Purest

Al-Quddus (الْقُدُّوسُ) means the Most Pure, the One utterly free of every flaw, weakness and need that touches His creation, and far above anything the imagination pictures. It matters to you because a heart tired of broken things finally has Someone to admire without disappointment.

Rootق د سThe root means purity and being set apart from all that soils. The Quran calls Palestine the Holy Land (al-ard al-muqaddasa), Jibril the Pure Spirit, and the angels say they sanctify Him (nuqaddisu laka). The form quddus is intensive and rare: not merely pure, but purity at its fullest, with nothing to remove.

Who He is as Al-Quddus

Al-Quddus is the One who is pure from every imperfection. Not a single weakness, need, mistake or limit that you know from creation applies to Him. He does not tire, forget, sleep, regret or need help. He has no partner, no child, no rival. Whatever your mind pictures, He is beyond it, because a picture is made from created things and He is not like them.

Scholars noted that our descriptions and His are usually opposites. We are made of need; He is free of it. We grow, decline and change; He is perfect without beginning or end. So Al-Quddus is not only a statement about Him. It quietly tells you the truth about everything else: every person, every system and every achievement has cracks in it.

It sits close to As-Salam, and the two came side by side in 59:23. Al-Quddus stresses that He is far above any flaw at all; As-Salam stresses that He is whole and sound, and that safety and peace flow from Him. One clears away every defect; the other gives security to all who turn to Him.

Where you see Al-Quddus at work

Look up at the sky. The Quran invites you to search it again and again for a crack (67:3) and your sight returns tired, having found none. What comes from the Perfect carries His mark. The same is true of His speech: the master poets of Arabia mocked the Prophet ﷺ, called him a poet and a sorcerer, yet could not point to a flawed word in the Quran. It holds no contradiction (4:82) because the One who spoke it has none.

The angels, who know Him best, describe their worship as sanctifying Him (2:30). The Prophet ﷺ used to say in his bowing and prostration, as reported in Sahih Muslim, subbuhun quddus, Rabbul mala'ikati war-ruh: Glorified and Most Pure, Lord of the angels and the Spirit. And, as reported in Sunan an-Nasa'i, after the witr prayer he would say three times, Glory be to the King, the Most Pure.

Handing your affairs to Him

People are drawn to perfection. We stare at a beautifully designed car or a painting with no wrong line. That pull is not bad; it is pointed in the wrong direction. When it fixes on people, we end up either worshipping someone who will one day let us down, or hating ourselves for not being flawless. Many young people today look in the mirror and feel disgust, because they compare their real face to edited images.

Knowing Al-Quddus frees you from both. Your spouse will have faults, your parents will make mistakes, your boss will be unfair, and you will fall short. That is expected; only One is without flaw. You stop demanding perfection from people and start forgiving them, and you stop hiding your own cracks. You can stand before Him as you are, because only the imperfect bow, and He is the One who makes them clean.

You are in front of the bathroom mirror, phone in hand, deciding which photo is good enough to post, zooming in on every mark. Pause and say Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus. Perfection already exists, and it is not your job to provide it. You can put the phone down and go out as the person He made.

I feel I have to be flawless, and people around me should be too.

Only Al-Quddus is flawless, so I can forgive the cracks in others and stop hiding my own.

Why the heart loves Him for it

Everything you have loved in this world had a blemish somewhere: the friend who changed, the home that felt small, the dream that turned ordinary once you had it. The heart keeps searching for something it can love without reservation. Al-Quddus is the answer to that search. With Him there is nothing to overlook and nothing to excuse. The more you know Him, the more there is to admire, and the love never has to shrink.

Call on Him

Ya Quddus, You are pure of every flaw and I am full of them. Purify my heart, cleanse my sins, and let me love You above every imperfect thing I cling to.

The Prophet ﷺ glorified Him as Quddus in bowing, in prostration and after witr, so it fits best in the quiet of prayer.
Try this today

After your witr or last prayer tonight, say Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus three times, and let go of one fault you have been holding against someone.
