The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right and close their hands. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them [accordingly]. Indeed, the hypocrites - it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.

Ibn Kathir explains that the hypocrites were the mirror image of the believers. They encouraged evil, discouraged good, and closed their hands from spending in Allah's cause. They forgot the remembrance of Allah, and so He treated them as if He had forgotten them.

A colleague suggests padding the expense report and you nod along. A friend wants to volunteer and you say it is a waste of a Saturday. Your phone gets your morning; Allah gets whatever is left. Forgetting rarely feels like a decision. It just happens one day at a time.

Forgetting Allah for a while is harmless. He will still be there.

The way I treat Allah's remembrance is the way I am treated.

Try this

Put one short remembrance of Allah on the first thing you do tomorrow morning.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

The hypocrites, men and women, are one from another; they enjoin evil, and forbid the good, and they close their hands. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the rebellious (67)Allah has promised the hypocrites – men and women – and the disbelievers, the fire of Hell; therein shall they abide. It will suffice them. Allah has cursed them and for them is the lasting torment (68)

Other Characteristics of Hypocrites

Allah admonishes the hypocrites who, unlike the believers, who enjoin righteousness and forbid evil,

(they enjoin evil, and forbid the good, and they close their hands), from spending in Allah's cause,

(They have forgotten Allah), they have forgotten the remembrance of Allah,

(so He has forgotten them.), by treating them as if He has forgotten them. Allah also,

(And it will be said: "This Day We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours)[45:34]. Allah said,

(Verily, the hypocrites are the rebellious) the rebellious from the way of truth who embrace the wicked way,

(Allah has promised the hypocrites – men and women – and the disbelievers, the fire of Hell), on account of their evildoing mentioned here,

(therein shall they abide.), for eternity, they and the disbelievers,

(It will suffice them.), as a torment,

(Allah has cursed them), He expelled and banished them [from His mercy],

(and for them is the lasting torment.)
