الْبَدِيعُ

Al-Badi' · The Incomparable Originator

Al-Badi' (الْبَدِيعُ) means the Incomparable Originator: the One who brought the heavens and the earth into being with no earlier model, no sample and no precedent, and whose work is astonishing in its beauty. When He decides a thing, He says Be, and it is. Nothing in your life is too new or unheard-of for Him.

Rootب د عThe root means to start something with no example before it. A badi' thing is unprecedented and wondrous, the kind of work that makes people stop and say: nothing like this has ever been seen. Al-Badi' is the Originator of a creation that had no pattern to follow.

Al-Badi' in the Quran

Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.

[He is] Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a son when He does not have a companion and He created all things? And He is, of all things, Knowing.

Who He is as Al-Badi'

When someone brings out a truly original invention, crowds gather around them. They read their life story, queue for their product, and treat them almost with reverence, all for something assembled from metal and glass that was already in the world, built on the ideas of others. Al-Badi' originated the whole universe with no material, no earlier idea and no example. He is not the first to do it well; He is the first, full stop.

This is what separates Al-Badi' from Al-Khaliq. Al-Khaliq speaks of measuring and bringing into being; Al-Badi' speaks of the utter newness of what He made. Everything human creativity produces borrows from His creation. The engineer copies the bird; the architect copies the honeycomb. He copied nothing.

And it costs Him nothing. In both places the Quran uses this name, it ties it to His complete independence: He only says to a thing, Be, and it is (2:117), and He has no son and no partner, for He created all things (6:101). The One who needs no model also needs no help.

Where you see Al-Badi' at work

Both verses that name Him Al-Badi' answer the claim that Allah has a son (2:116-117, 6:100-101). The reasoning is beautiful: the One who originated the heavens and earth from nothing has no need of offspring, a partner or a helper. A creator who needs a family is a creature. Al-Badi' is above that.

Yusuf, at the end of his long story, called on Allah as Fatir, the One who split open the heavens and the earth into being (12:101), when his dream finally came true. The boy in the well, the slave, the prisoner, now reunited with his family on a throne: no one could have predicted that path. Al-Badi' writes stories no one has read before.

Handing your affairs to Him

We often judge what is possible by what we have seen. No one in my family has done this. No one recovers from this. No one gets out of this kind of debt. That thinking quietly limits Allah to precedent. Al-Badi' made a universe without one. A way out that has never been seen before is no harder for Him than one that has.

So when you ask Him, do not ask small. Ask the One who said Be to the heavens and earth for the cure, the reconciliation, the opening that seems unheard of. Then do your part and leave the how to Him; He does not need your plan as a model either.

The specialist closes the file and says gently that cases like yours are rare, and there is no standard path. You walk out into the car park feeling like there is no map. Remember that the heavens and earth had no map either. Al-Badi' does not need a precedent to open a way for you.

If something has never happened before, I assume it cannot happen to me.

Al-Badi' originated everything without precedent, so nothing is impossible because it is new.

Why the heart loves Him for it

Wonder is one of the doors to love. Snowflakes that never repeat, sunsets that are never the same twice, a newborn's face: Al-Badi' fills the world with first-time beauty. A heart that keeps noticing His originality keeps falling in love with Him, because it never gets used to Him.

Call on Him

Ya Badi' as-samawati wal-ard, You made the heavens and the earth with nothing before them. Make for me a way out that I cannot yet imagine.

A well-known supplication recorded by Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i calls on Allah as Badi' of the heavens and the earth, the Possessor of majesty and honour.
