الْحَفِيظُ

Al-Hafiz · The Preserver

Al-Hafiz (الْحَفِيظُ) means the Preserver, the Guardian: the One who holds the heavens and earth in place, keeps every deed safely recorded, and protects His servants from harm in their faith and their lives. It means that whatever you entrust to Him, your family, your faith, your good deeds, is kept safer than you could ever keep it.

Rootح ف ظHifz is guarding something so it is not lost or damaged, and keeping it so it is not forgotten. The same word is used for memorising the Quran by heart. Al-Hafiz guards what exists from falling apart and keeps what was done from being lost.

Al-Hafiz in the Quran

But if they turn away, [say], "I have already conveyed that with which I was sent to you. My Lord will give succession to a people other than you, and you will not harm Him at all. Indeed my Lord is, over all things, Guardian."

    Hud 11:57 →

And he had over them no authority except [it was decreed] that We might make evident who believes in the Hereafter from who is thereof in doubt. And your Lord, over all things, is Guardian.

    Saba 34:21 →

And those who take as allies other than Him - Allah is [yet] Guardian over them; and you, [O Muhammad], are not over them a manager.

Who He is as Al-Hafiz

Al-Hafiz preserves in two ways. He keeps creation in being: the heavens, the earth and everything in them would collapse in an instant without Him, yet guarding them does not tire Him at all (2:255). He made the sky a protected ceiling (21:32). Every moment the world continues is His guarding at work.

He also keeps the record. Not a deed of His servants is lost. He has appointed noble angels who guard and write (82:10-11), but He Himself is the Guardian over all things (11:57, 34:21). What you did years ago and forgot is kept with Him exactly.

And He protects His servants. Angels guard each person, before and behind, by the command of Allah (13:11). Above all, He protects the faith of those who turn to Him from trials that would destroy it. Ar-Raqib watches over you; Al-Hafiz keeps you safe. Human guards sleep, get distracted and fail. His guarding never lapses.

Where you see Al-Hafiz at work

Yaqub had already lost Yusuf after trusting his sons with him. When they asked to take his youngest son, Binyamin, he said: Allah is the best guardian, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful (12:64). He did take a promise from them and gave them sensible advice, but his heart rested on Al-Hafiz. In the end Allah returned both sons to him.

Allah said of the Quran: We sent down the Reminder and We will surely guard it (15:9). For more than fourteen centuries the same words have been recited, memorised by children and carried across the world. Every hafiz of the Quran is a living sign of Al-Hafiz.

When the Prophet Hud stood alone before a powerful people who threatened him, he told them they could not harm Allah at all, for his Lord is Guardian over all things (11:57). One man against a nation, and he was not afraid.

Handing your affairs to Him

Parents lie awake worrying about their children: the school gate, the phone, the friends, the future. You cannot follow them everywhere. Al-Hafiz can, and He does. Do what you can: teach, pray, guide. Then say, like Yaqub, that Allah is the best guardian, and let your heart rest.

The Prophet ﷺ advised the young Ibn Abbas: guard Allah, and He will guard you (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). Guard His limits and His rights in your life, and He will guard you in your faith, your family and your affairs. Trying to keep everything safe by your own vigilance alone leads to exhaustion and control. Guarding His commands leads to His protection.

This name also comforts you about your good deeds. The charity you gave, the prayers you prayed, the patience you showed are not lost to time. They are kept with the One who never forgets.

Your teenager has just left for their first trip abroad without you, and the house feels too quiet. You keep checking the tracking app. Al-Hafiz is with them where you cannot be. Put the phone down, make dua for them by this name, and hand them over to the best Guardian.

If I do not watch over everything myself, something will go wrong.

Al-Hafiz is the best guardian, so I do my part and leave what I love in His keeping.

Why the heart loves Him for it

We love those who keep our secrets, keep our trust and keep us safe. Al-Hafiz does all three, perfectly and without end. Everything precious to you is safest in His keeping.

There is a deep peace in loving the One who has been protecting you all your life, from dangers you never knew were close.

Call on Him

Ya Hafiz, guard my faith, my family and my heart. Keep what I have entrusted to You, and keep me from what would harm me in this world and the next.

Call on Him by this name when you say goodbye to loved ones or fear for your faith; Yaqub said Allah is the best guardian when he let his son go (12:64).
Try this today

When someone you love leaves the house today, quietly say: I entrust you to Allah, the Guardian.

Questions about Al-Hafiz

What does Al-Hafiz mean?

Al-Hafiz means the Preserver and Guardian. Allah keeps the heavens and earth in existence, preserves every deed on record so that nothing is lost, and protects His servants in their faith and their lives. Guarding all of this never tires Him (2:255).

What does Allah is the best guardian mean?

These words were said by the Prophet Yaqub in Surah Yusuf (12:64) when he let his son Binyamin travel after losing Yusuf. They express taking sensible precautions while trusting that Allah protects better than anyone, and that He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.

Is there a connection between Al-Hafiz and a hafiz of the Quran?

Yes, they share the same root, which means guarding and keeping safe from loss. A person who memorises the Quran guards it in their heart, and Allah promised to guard the Quran itself (15:9). Its preservation through memorisation is one sign of His name Al-Hafiz.
