الْوَكِيلُ

Al-Wakil · The Trustee

Al-Wakil (الْوَكِيلُ) means the Trustee, the Disposer of affairs: the One who manages all things in creation and who takes full charge of the affairs of anyone who entrusts themselves to Him. It means you can do your part and then hand the outcome to Him, instead of carrying the whole weight on your own shoulders.

Rootو ك لWakala means to entrust, to hand a matter over to someone and lean on them for it. A wakil is the agent you appoint to act for you. Tawakkul, reliance, comes from the same root. Al-Wakil is the One you can hand everything to, and who never mishandles it.

Al-Wakil in the Quran

Those to whom hypocrites said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

[Moses] said, "That is [established] between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete - there is no injustice to me, and Allah, over what we say, is Witness."

  4. رَّبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذۡهُ وَكِيلٗا

[He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs.

Who He is as Al-Wakil

Al-Wakil manages the affairs of the whole creation. He is the Lord of the east and the west, so take Him as your Trustee (73:9). Every affair in the universe is already in His hands; when you rely on Him, you are simply recognising who has been in charge all along.

A human agent is limited. He may be busy, dishonest, mistaken or simply unable. Al-Wakil knows everything, has power over everything, and is perfectly wise and merciful. Allah is enough as Disposer of affairs (33:3). Whoever relies on Him, He is enough for him (65:3).

This name sits close to Al-Hasib and Al-Waliyy. Al-Hasib is the One who is enough. Al-Waliyy is the close protecting Friend. Al-Wakil is the One you actively hand your matters to. Tawakkul is not doing nothing; it is doing what you can with your limbs while your heart leans entirely on Him.

Where you see Al-Wakil at work

Yaqub sent his sons to Egypt with practical advice: do not all enter by one gate, use different gates. Then he said that he could not avail them against Allah at all, and upon Him he relied (12:67). That is tawakkul in one verse: take sensible means, then rest the heart on Allah. When his sons gave their promise, he said: Allah is Trustee over what we say (12:66).

Sahih al-Bukhari records that Ibrahim said Allah is enough for us, and He is the best Trustee when he was thrown into the fire, and the Prophet ﷺ and his companions said it when told that an army had gathered against them (3:173). The fire was made cool, and the believers returned with blessing.

The Prophet ﷺ said that if you relied on Allah as He truly deserves, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out hungry in the morning and return full in the evening (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). The birds still fly out. They do not sit in the nest.

Handing your affairs to Him

We often over-rely on the means: the salary, the doctor, the medicine, the contact who can help. These are tools of Allah, and we should use them. But trusting the tool instead of its Maker leaves us anxious, because tools break and contacts let us down. If you have every piece of a cupboard but no screwdriver, you cannot build it. Every means works only by His permission.

So do the work fully: send the applications, take the medicine, prepare for the interview. Then hand the result to Al-Wakil. The heart that has handed its outcomes to Him sleeps differently. If the door opens, it was His choice; if it closes, it was His choice too, and He chooses better.

The Prophet ﷺ taught a morning and evening dua asking Allah not to leave him to himself even for the blink of an eye (Sunan Abu Dawud). Relying on yourself alone is a burden too heavy for anyone.

Your startup's funding round falls through two days before payroll. You have made every call you can, and your chest is tight. You have done your part; now hand the outcome to Al-Wakil. Pray two rak'ahs, say hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil, and make the next call with a calmer heart.

If I stop worrying and controlling everything, it will all fall apart.

I do my part and hand the outcome to Al-Wakil, who manages it better than I ever could.

Why the heart loves Him for it

When you hand a heavy matter to someone utterly reliable and they take it off your hands, you feel relief and gratitude. Al-Wakil offers that for every matter of your life.

The more you hand to Him and see Him carry it, the more you love Him, and the easier it becomes to trust Him with the next thing.

Call on Him

Ya Wakil, I have done what I can and I hand the rest to You. Take charge of my affairs, set them right, and do not leave me to myself even for a blink of an eye.

Call on Him by this name when you face something beyond your control, saying hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil as the believers did (3:173).

Write down one thing you are anxious about, list the means you will take, then say out loud: I hand the rest to Allah.

Questions about Al-Wakil

What does Al-Wakil mean?

No. Tawakkul means taking the available means while the heart relies on Allah for the result. Yaqub advised his sons to enter by different gates and then said upon Allah I rely (12:67). The Prophet ﷺ compared it to birds that go out every morning to find food.
