الْحَكَمُ

Al-Hakam · The Judge

Al-Hakam (الحكم) means the Judge: the One whose ruling decides every matter, who judges between His creation in this life and on the Day of Resurrection, and whose verdict is never mistaken and never overturned. It matters because every unresolved argument and hidden wrong will one day be settled by Him.

Rootح ك مHukm is to judge and decide. Its oldest picture is the hakamah, the bridle around a horse's mouth that holds it back from bolting and steers it for its own good. A judge holds back wrong; a ruling holds things in their place. The same root gives hikmah, wisdom.

Who He is as Al-Hakam

Al-Hakam is the Judge. A man came to the Prophet ﷺ whose people called him Abu al-Hakam because he settled their disputes. The Prophet ﷺ told him that Allah is Al-Hakam and judgment belongs to Him, praised his fairness, and called him instead by his son's name, Abu Shurayh (Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan al-Nasa'i). The title of ultimate Judge was too great to give to anyone else.

His judging reaches three places. He decrees what happens in the universe. He lays down what is right and wrong in His revelation. And He judges between His servants and repays them. In all three, His ruling is final and nothing reverses it. Is it other than Allah I should seek as judge, when He has sent down the Book explained in detail (6:114)? Is not Allah the most just of judges (95:8)?

Human judges work with missing evidence, tired minds and hidden biases, and their verdicts are appealed and overturned. Al-Hakam knows the hidden motive and the unspoken word. No bribe reaches Him and no clever lawyer misleads Him. Al-Hakam is close to Al-Hakim, the Wise: Al-Hakim stresses the wisdom in everything He does, while Al-Hakam stresses the deciding, the verdict that settles a matter.

Where you see Al-Hakam at work

The bridle is the picture of His law. It restrains the horse, turns it left and right, and does it for the horse's benefit. A road with no traffic lights is not freedom; it is wreckage. When you buy a machine you read the maker's manual before you use it. Allah made us, knows what helps and harms us, and gave us His rulings as a manual, not as a cage.

On the Day of Resurrection every dispute will come before Him. Allah will judge between you on the Day concerning what you used to differ over (22:69). The family feud that never healed, the court case that went the wrong way, the slander nobody corrected: each will be heard by the One who was present for all of it.

Handing your affairs to Him

When you have been wronged and cannot prove it, the case is still open, and the Judge has already seen every detail. You can stop replaying the argument at night, because the verdict is in safe hands.

When one of His rulings feels hard, remember the bridle. Judging His commands only by what feels free in the moment misses that the One who rules knows both the rider and the road. And when you are the one who did wrong, settle it now with the people involved, while settling is still easy.

The family argument over the inheritance has gone quiet but not cold, and you replay it every time their name lights up your phone. You were treated unfairly and cannot make anyone see it. Al-Hakam sees every detail and will judge with perfect fairness. Do what is right on your side, make dua for them, and put the case down.

If I cannot prove that I was wronged, the injustice will simply stand forever.

Allah is the Judge, and every hidden wrong will be decided by Him with complete knowledge and fairness.

Why the heart loves Him for it

Something deep in every person longs for fairness: for the truth to come out, for the wronged to be cleared, for the cheat to be stopped. Al-Hakam is the answer to that longing, so the heart rests in Him and loves Him for it. You can live gently, forgive generously and still know that justice has not been cancelled.

Call on Him

Ya Hakam, judge between me and those I have differed with by the truth, forgive me for the wrongs I have done to others, and make me content with Your rulings in my life and in Your law.

Call on Him by this name when you have been wronged and cannot get justice, or when His command feels hard and you need to trust His judgment.
