الْمُقْتَدِرُ

Al-Muqtadir · The Creator of all power

Al-Muqtadir (الْمُقْتَدِرُ) means The All-Determining, the Possessor of complete power: Allah's ability is not only present but fully exercised, taking hold of every matter decisively, determining it precisely, with nothing slipping from His grip. It is the power that seized Pharaoh's army, that turns a green field to dust, and that seats the righteous near Him in Paradise.

Rootق د رFrom qadara, to be able and to measure. The form muqtadir adds intensity and full possession: one who has taken complete command of his power and exercises it at will. Where qadir means able, muqtadir means able with full, decisive control, the power that actually takes hold and settles the outcome.

Al-Muqtadir in the Quran

And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.

Who He is as Al-Muqtadir

Al-Qadir tells you Allah is able. Al-Muqtadir tells you that ability is in full command and full use. Nothing is merely possible for Him and then left to chance; He takes hold of every matter, determines its measure, and carries it through, with nothing escaping His grip. Scholars describe it as the most complete expression of power: the One who has power over the very powers He created in others.

Every ability you have, to walk, think, earn, or persuade, was created and measured by Him. Al-Muqtadir is not one power among many; He determines how much power everyone else gets and how long they keep it. His own capacity has no limit, and every other capacity is a portion He allotted.

The Quran uses this name in three places, and each reveals something. In 54:42 He seized those who denied His signs with the seizure of One Mighty, All-Determining. In 18:45 the life of this world is like rain that brings up green vegetation which soon becomes dry chaff scattered by the wind, and Allah has full power over all things. In 54:55 the righteous sit in a seat of truth near a King, All-Determining.

Where you see Al-Muqtadir at work

Pharaoh had the greatest army of his age, a palace guard, magicians and engineers. He chased a small band of former slaves to the sea, sure of his control. Al-Muqtadir took hold of the situation in a single moment, and the pursuer drowned in the path that had saved the pursued. Control that does not come from Him is an illusion.

Look at autumn. Leaves that were green and full in summer turn yellow, then brown, then fall and blow away. Gardens, careers, empires, faces: the Quran's parable in 18:45 says they all follow this pattern, and Al-Muqtadir holds every stage. The very next verse adds that wealth and children are the adornment of this life, but lasting good deeds are better with your Lord (18:46).

Handing your affairs to Him

Anxiety often comes from feeling that things are slipping: the economy, your child's choices, your health, a court case. Nothing is slipping from Al-Muqtadir. Every outcome you fear is held in a grip that never loosens and a measure that is never wrong. You do your part fully, and then let go of what was never in your hand.

It also guards against despair at injustice. The arrogant may seem to have total control for a long time. But they hold only the power He measured out to them, for the time He set, and then His seizure is that of the Mighty, the All-Determining.

You refresh the tracking page for the third time: the visa decision, the job offer, the test result, all sitting in someone's inbox. You feel everything is out of your hands. It is out of your hands, and fully in His. Make dua, close the tab, and go do something good while Al-Muqtadir settles it.

If I do not keep control of every detail, everything will fall apart.

Al-Muqtadir holds every outcome firmly; I do my part and trust His grip, which never slips.

Why the heart loves Him for it

The most beautiful use of this name is the last one. In Paradise, the righteous are seated in an honored place near a King, All-Determining (54:55). The same complete power that ended Pharaoh's tyranny is what guarantees the believer's reward: nothing can delay it, reduce it or take it away. The heart longs for that seat, and for the One beside it.

Call on Him

Ya Muqtadir, every matter is in Your grip and nothing escapes You. Take hold of my affairs with Your mercy, protect me from those who wrong me, and seat me among the righteous near You, the King, the All-Determining.

Call on Al-Muqtadir when things feel out of control, and recall 54:55, the promise of a seat of truth near the King, the All-Determining.
Try this today

Name one situation you have been trying to control obsessively, do the one action that is actually yours, then consciously hand the rest to Him in dua.
