الْقَادِرُ

Al-Qadir · The Powerful

Al-Qadir (الْقَادِرُ) means The All-Able: Allah is able to do anything He wills, and nothing in the heavens or the earth can defeat Him. The same root means to measure, so His power always comes with perfect proportion and timing. Knowing this name lets you ask for the impossible and make sense of the hardest chapters of your life.

Rootق د رQadara has two linked meanings: to be able, and to measure or determine the size, shape and time of something. Qudra is power; qadar is measure and decree. So Al-Qadir is not raw force: He is able to do anything, and everything He does arrives in the exact amount, form and moment He determined.

Who He is as Al-Qadir

Al-Qadir is the One who is able to do whatever He wills, with no limit, no effort and no help. When He intends a thing, He only says to it Be, and it is (36:82). The Quran uses three related forms: Qadir, the Able; Qadeer, the intensive form, whose ability is constant and covers all things; and Muqtadir, power in full and decisive exercise. Al-Qadir is the root of them all: pure ability.

Because the same root means measure, His power is never chaotic. He created all things with measure (54:49). This is why the Quran so often invites us to look at creation to know this name: He created seven heavens and their like of earth so that you may know that Allah is able to do all things (65:12). A machine-made car tells you its maker was skilled. A universe where no two fingerprints or snowflakes match tells you its Maker's ability has no ceiling.

Al-Qadir differs from Al-Qawiyy. Al-Qawiyy is strength; Al-Qadir is capability: that nothing is beyond His reach. And it differs from Al-Muqtadir, which stresses that this ability is fully exercised, taking hold of things decisively.

Where you see Al-Qadir at work

A man passed a ruined town and wondered how Allah could ever bring it back to life. Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then revived him, showed him his food unspoiled and his donkey rebuilt from bare bones, and the man said: I know that Allah is able to do all things (2:259). Every night we see a small version: Allah takes our souls in sleep and returns them in the morning (39:42).

Zakariyya was old and his wife barren, and he asked how he could have a son. The angel replied: so it is; Allah does what He wills (3:40). Ibrahim's wife was astonished to be given such news in old age, and the angels asked whether she was amazed at Allah's command (11:73).

And Musa, after a childhood floated down the Nile, a killing, exile and years of hired labor, was told at the fire: then you came here at the decreed time, Musa (20:40). Every hardship had been measured to prepare him. Al-Qadir was not only able; He was precise.

Handing your affairs to Him

Bring Him the impossible: the infertility, the debt that cannot be paid, the relative who seems beyond guidance, the illness with poor odds. What is impossible for you is not even difficult for Al-Qadir. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to be resolute in dua and not to say forgive me if You wish, for no one can compel Him (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). Ask with certainty.

And when you look back at a painful past, remember qadar, measure. If you read your life as a list of accidents, you will never have the confidence to serve Him. If you see that each chapter was measured, as Musa's was, you can stand up to your own Pharaohs. The Prophet ﷺ taught a dhikr ending with: and He is able to do all things, saying it a hundred times in a day brings great reward (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

The IVF clinic emails: the latest round did not work, and the odds for the next are low. You stare at the percentages. Percentages describe what people can do; Al-Qadir is not bound by them. Close the laptop, stand for prayer, and ask Him with certainty, as Zakariyya did.

Some things are simply impossible, and my past was a series of accidents.

Al-Qadir can do anything, and He has measured every chapter of my life with care.

Why the heart loves Him for it

We love those who can help us and choose to. Al-Qadir can do anything, and He chose to make you, feed you, guide you and measure your trials so they would grow you rather than break you. The heart falls in love with power that is limitless and yet so carefully measured for its good.

Call on Him

Ya Qadir, You are able to do all things and nothing is difficult for You. Do for me what I cannot do for myself, make the impossible easy for me, and let me see Your measured wisdom in all You have decreed.

Call on Al-Qadir when the odds are against you, resolute and certain, as the Prophet ﷺ taught: no one can compel Him, and nothing is beyond Him.
Try this today

Write down one thing you had stopped asking for because it seemed impossible, and ask Allah for it today with certainty.

Questions about Al-Qadir

What does Al-Qadir mean?

Al-Qadir means The All-Able or The Powerful. It describes Allah as able to do anything He wills, without limit, effort or help. The same root means to measure, so His power always acts with perfect proportion and timing.

What is the difference between Al-Qadir and Al-Muqtadir?

Al-Qadir affirms that Allah is able to do anything. Al-Muqtadir is a more emphatic form that stresses this power being fully and decisively exercised, holding complete control over what He does, as in His seizing of Pharaoh's people (54:42).

What is the difference between Qadir and Qadeer?

Both come from the same root. Qadir means able. Qadeer, the intensive form, stresses that His ability is constant and comprehensive, which is why the Quran so often says Allah is Qadeer over all things.

Is anything impossible for Allah?

Nothing He wills is beyond Him; when He intends a thing He says Be, and it is (36:82). The Quran repeats more than thirty times that Allah is able to do all things, and asks the reader to see it in creation and resurrection.
