الْمُتَعَالِي

Al-Muta'ali · The Supreme One

Al-Muta'ali (الْمُتَعَالِي) means The Supremely Exalted: Allah rises infinitely above every flaw, every limitation and every likeness to His creation, and above everything by His power. It is the meaning inside the ta'ala Muslims say after His name. Yet the one verse that names Him so also says your secret and your spoken word are the same to Him.

Rootع ل وFrom 'uluw, height. The form muta'ali (from ta'ala) conveys rising above, transcending, being exalted beyond reach. The everyday phrase Allah ta'ala, Allah the Exalted, comes from it. Where 'ali names height as an attribute, muta'ali emphasizes how far He transcends anything that could be compared to Him or said against Him.

Who He is as Al-Muta'ali

Al-Muta'ali appears once in the Quran, in a verse of breathtaking compression: Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Great, the Supremely Exalted (13:9). It means He is exalted above every imperfection, above every resemblance to what He created, and above everything by His power over it. No weakness, no need, no limit, no rival, no comparison reaches Him.

It differs from Al-Aliyy. Al-Aliyy affirms that He is high in essence, rank and power. Al-Muta'ali adds the sense of transcendence: whatever people imagine, invent or say about God, He is beyond it. That is why the Quran so often says: exalted is He, ta'ala, high above what they associate with Him, and high above what they say, a great exaltation (17:43).

Every time you say Allah ta'ala or subhanahu wa ta'ala, you are using this name's meaning. It keeps your idea of God clean: not a bigger human, not a force of nature, but the One beyond all likeness.

Where you see Al-Muta'ali at work

Read the verses around it. Just before: Allah knows what every womb carries, what it lacks and what it adds, and everything with Him is by measure (13:8). Just after: it is the same to Him whether you hide your speech or say it aloud, whether you hide by night or walk openly by day (13:10). The Supremely Exalted is placed between the womb and the whisper.

That is the Quran's way of correcting two errors at once. Some imagine God so high that He is absent from daily life; others imagine Him so near that He becomes like a creature. Al-Muta'ali is exalted beyond every likeness, and His knowledge misses nothing: not a heartbeat in the dark of the womb, not a word whispered at night.

Handing your affairs to Him

When you feel your situation is too small for the Lord of the worlds, a minor worry about a child, a private shame, a fear you have never told anyone, remember that the One named Al-Muta'ali in 13:9 is described in 13:10 as hearing your hidden speech exactly as clearly as your loud speech. Being exalted does not make Him distant.

And when you feel overwhelmed by people's claims, ideologies that mock faith, voices that reduce God to a myth, Al-Muta'ali is your calm. Nothing said against Him touches Him. He remains Supremely Exalted, and so does the truth you hold.

Late at night you type a worry into a search engine that you would never say aloud. Before you hit enter, stop. The Supremely Exalted already heard it, as clearly as if you had shouted it (13:10). Close the tab, and say it to Him instead.

God is so exalted that my private worries are beneath His notice.

Al-Muta'ali is beyond every limit, which is exactly why nothing about me escapes Him.

Why the heart loves Him for it

We are drawn to greatness that is pure: no hidden flaws, no ego, no limits. Al-Muta'ali is greatness without a single shadow. And the heart melts when it realizes that this transcendent Lord has chosen to know every detail of its life, from the womb onward, with perfect care.

Call on Him

Ya Muta'ali, You are exalted above every flaw and every likeness, and my secret and my speech are the same to You. Purify my belief in You, hear what I cannot say aloud, and raise me by Your mercy.

Call on Al-Muta'ali when your belief needs purifying or your worries feel too private to voice, recalling 13:9-10.
