Light upon light, for the heart that feels dark
An-Nur: the Light of the heavens and the earth, who lights up the believer's heart
Who He is as An-Nur
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth (24:35). Scholars affirm light as His attribute, in a way that befits Him and resembles nothing in creation, and explain that every light in existence comes from Him. In Sahih Muslim the Prophet ﷺ described His veil as light. The light we know, sun, stars, lamps, is created; An-Nur is its Creator and far above it.
Notice how the Quran speaks: He brings the believers out of darknesses into the light (2:257). Darkness is plural, light is singular. There are many ways to be lost, many kinds of confusion and sin and despair, but one light. He is the source of the clarity that ties everything together.
His light also reaches hearts. Is one whose chest Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is upon a light from his Lord, like one whose heart is hardened (39:22)? Revelation is called light: We made it a light by which We guide whom We will (42:52). The Prophet ﷺ is called an illuminating lamp (33:46).
Where you see An-Nur at work
The great parable in Surah an-Nur describes a niche, a lamp inside a glass like a shining star, lit from the oil of a blessed olive tree, oil that almost glows even before fire touches it: light upon light; Allah guides to His light whom He wills (24:35). The companion Ubayy ibn Ka'b explained it as the likeness of the believer's heart: a clear heart, pure nature ready to shine, and then the fire of revelation lights it.
On the Day of Judgment, believers will walk with their light running before them and on their right (57:12), praying: our Lord, perfect our light for us and forgive us (66:8). The light you gather now is the light you walk by then. The Prophet ﷺ would begin his night prayer praising Allah as the Light of the heavens and the earth, as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Handing your affairs to Him
Some nights the darkness is inside. Depression, guilt, confusion about what to do next. You keep trying to think your way out and the dark only gets thicker. Knowing An-Nur means you stop relying on your own small torch. Turn to Him: pray, read a little Quran, say His name. Light is not something you manufacture; it is something you receive.
Sin dims the heart, but it does not have to stay dim. Repentance clears the glass. You can have knowledge and still be in the dark if the heart refuses it; you can know little and still be full of light if He places it in you. Ask Him for that light, again and again.
It is 2am, the room is dark, and your thoughts are darker: the mistake you made, the future you cannot see. Instead of scrolling for a distraction, sit up and recite Ayat an-Nur, 24:35, slowly. Ask the Light of the heavens and the earth to put light in your heart.
When I feel lost in darkness, I think I have to find the way out by myself.
An-Nur brings people out of darknesses into light, and I can ask Him to light my heart.
Why the heart loves Him for it
People are drawn to light: a lit window on a cold night, sunrise after a long dark. An-Nur is the light behind every light the heart has ever loved. The more of His light enters you, through the Quran and remembrance, the more you love Him, and the more you see everything else clearly.
O Allah, You are An-Nur, the Light of the heavens and the earth. Place light in my heart, my sight, my hearing and my path, and perfect my light on the Day I meet You.
This draws on the Prophet's ﷺ dua for light in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim, and the believers' prayer in 66:8 to have their light perfected.Learn the Prophet's ﷺ dua for light from Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim: Allahumma ij'al fi qalbi nura, O Allah, place light in my heart, and say it after Fajr today.
