الرَّشِيدُ

Ar-Rashid · The Most Righteous Guide

Ar-Rashid (الرَّشِيدُ) means the Rightly Directing: the One whose every decree and act is sound and wise, who steers all affairs to their right end without needing anyone's advice, and who guides His servants to right judgement. When you cannot tell which choice is right, you are turning to the One who never makes a wrong one.

Rootر ش دRushd is being on the right course: sound judgement, maturity, choosing what truly leads to good. It is the opposite of ghayy, drifting into error. The Quran uses it for an orphan mature enough to manage his wealth. Ar-Rashid is the One whose direction of all things is perfectly sound.

Ar-Rashid in the Quran

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

Who He is as Ar-Rashid

Al-Hadi shows the way and moves the heart to take it. Ar-Rashid speaks of the soundness of His own direction: every decree He makes, every turn He gives to events, is right, and leads to its proper end. He does not plan by trial and error, does not consult, and never has to correct Himself.

From that soundness He gives rushd to His servants: the ability to judge well and choose rightly. The right course has become clear from error (2:256). Allah gave Ibrahim his rushd early (21:51). Musa, a great prophet, still asked a servant of Allah to teach him some of the rushd he had been taught (18:66). Right judgement is a gift you can ask for.

The name Ar-Rashid is not found in this exact form in the Quran; it is in the well-known list narrated by at-Tirmidhi, and its meaning runs through the Quran's language of rushd.

Where you see Ar-Rashid at work

Surah al-Kahf is full of this word. The young men fleeing to the cave prayed: our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us right guidance in our affair (18:10). Whoever Allah guides is truly guided, and whoever He leaves astray will find no guardian to direct him rightly (18:17). The Prophet ﷺ was taught to say: perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct (18:24).

Then Musa travels with the servant of Allah. A boat is damaged, a boy is killed, a wall is rebuilt for free, and each act looks wrong. At the end the reasons appear: a tyrant seizing good boats, parents protected, two orphans' treasure kept safe until they came of age (18:79-82). What looked like disorder was the right course all along.

Handing your affairs to Him

Big decisions can paralyse you: which job, which person to marry, whether to move. You fear one wrong choice will ruin everything, as if the whole outcome rests on your judgement. The Prophet ﷺ taught the istikharah prayer, recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, in which you ask Allah by His knowledge and power to decree what is good for your religion, your life and your end, and to turn you away from what is not. You do your research, pray, decide, and leave the steering to Ar-Rashid.

It also helps when events go against your plans. Perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you, and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you; Allah knows and you do not (2:216). You may not see the reason this year, or ever in this life. But the One who steers it never steers wrong.

Two job offers sit in your inbox, and you have made a spreadsheet, asked five friends, and still cannot sleep. Tonight, pray two rak'ahs of istikharah, ask Ar-Rashid to choose what is right for your faith and your future, then make your decision and rest. He is steering.

I feel that everything depends on me making exactly the right decision.

I decide as wisely as I can, and Ar-Rashid steers the outcome to its right end.

Why the heart loves Him for it

We grow to love people whose judgement we can always trust. Ar-Rashid has never once made a wrong decision about you. When you look back and see how He steered you past things you begged for and toward things you feared, love and trust grow together.

Call on Him

Ya Rashid, grant me mercy from You and prepare for me right guidance in my affair. Choose for me, and make me pleased with what You choose.

This echoes the dua of the young men of the cave in 18:10; call on Him by this name before any decision and alongside istikharah.
