No one bears more from His creation, or answers with more provision
The Most Patient, who endures what people say and do and delays to an appointed time
Who He is as As-Sabur
The Prophet ﷺ said that no one is more patient with hurtful words he hears than Allah: people claim He has a son, and still He grants them health and provision (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). As-Sabur is patience that keeps giving while being wronged.
Sabr in Arabic is holding back. As-Sabur holds back the reckoning of those who deserve it, not from weakness or lack of knowledge, but to an appointed time. The Quran says plainly: never think Allah unaware of what the wrongdoers do; He only delays them for a Day when eyes will stare (14:42).
This name is close to Al-Halim, and scholars note the difference in emphasis. Al-Halim is calm that is not provoked; As-Sabur is endurance that waits out a matter to its set time. Human patience costs us; we grit our teeth and suffer. His patience costs Him nothing and never turns into weariness or helplessness. The name is not mentioned in the Quran in this form; it comes in the well-known list of names transmitted by al-Tirmidhi, and its meaning is affirmed in authentic hadith.
Where you see As-Sabur at work
Look at how long He has borne with humanity: people who deny Him breathe His air, eat His food and use the very faculties He gave them to argue against Him. Some of them, given time, became believers who changed history. Had He hastened the reckoning, they would never have had the chance.
His patience is behind the Quran's repeated reminder that He defers people. Your Lord is Forgiving, full of mercy; if He seized people for what they earned, He would hasten their punishment, but they have an appointment (18:58). Patience on His side means time on ours.
He loves to see a share of this quality in His servants. He is with the patient (2:153), and the patient will be given their reward without measure (39:10). He told His Prophet ﷺ to be patient, and that his patience was only through Allah (16:127).
Handing your affairs to Him
When you watch injustice continue, it is easy to feel that no one is answering. Despair about the world often comes from mistaking His patience for absence. As-Sabur has not missed a single detail. He has set a time, and it will come.
His patience is also hope for you. However long you have delayed returning to Him, He has borne it and kept providing. The fact that you are still here, still able to turn, is His patience with you. And when your own patience runs thin with a child, a colleague or an illness, ask the Most Patient for a share of it; the Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever strives to be patient, Allah gives him patience (Sahih al-Bukhari).
You read another news story where the guilty walk free, and you close the app feeling sick and powerless. As-Sabur has not looked away; He has set a day. Pray for the wronged, do the good within your reach, and let His patience steady yours instead of feeding your despair.
When wrongdoers go unpunished, it feels like no one is in control.
As-Sabur sees all of it, holds the reckoning to an appointed time, and gives everyone a chance to return first.
Why the heart loves Him for it
Picture someone you have hurt again and again, who still sets a place for you at the table every night. You would not be able to stay away for long. As-Sabur has borne more from you than anyone, and the table is still set.
Ya Sabur, You have borne so much from me and still provided for me. Give me a share of patience in what I cannot change, and do not take me before I return to You.
Call on Him as As-Sabur when injustice or delay tests your faith; His patience is wisdom, not absence.Choose one situation where you usually lose patience, such as a slow queue or a child's questions, and practise staying calm in it today for His sake.
