الرَّزَّاقُ

Ar-Razzaq · The Sustainer

Ar-Razzaq (الرَّزَّاقُ) means The Provider: the One who constantly and abundantly provides for every creature, not only food and money but guidance, love, knowledge and Paradise. He gives without calculation and with no strings attached. Knowing this name frees you from fear about money and makes you generous, hopeful and bold in what you ask.

Rootر ز قThe Arabs used rizq for the way a mother bird places food straight into her chick's open beak: nourishment that arrives without the chick earning it. It then came to mean any provision that keeps a creature alive, and more widely any good thing given to someone.

Ar-Razzaq in the Quran

  1. إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلۡقُوَّةِ ٱلۡمَتِينُ

Indeed, it is Allah who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.

Who He is as Ar-Razzaq

Ar-Razzaq is an intensive form: not just one who provides, but the One who provides constantly, abundantly, to every creature at once. There is no creature on earth whose provision is not upon Allah; He knows where it lives and where it rests (11:6). The Quran names Him once with this exact form: Allah is Ar-Razzaq, the Possessor of strength, the Firm (51:58).

People provide too: a parent for a child, a guardian for an orphan. But we only pass on what we were given; we need means to give; we need provision ourselves; and we often give with an agenda. He provides from nothing, needs nothing, and wants nothing back. We budget and keep lists of who gave what at our weddings. He gives without calculation (3:37).

And rizq is far wider than food. Shu'ayb told his people that his Lord had given him good provision (11:88), which many commentators explain as guidance. The Prophet ﷺ said of Khadijah that he had been given her love as provision, as recorded in Sahih Muslim. Those who die in Allah's path are alive, receiving provision with their Lord (3:169). Someone with little in the bank may be among the richest people alive.

Where you see Ar-Razzaq at work

Maryam was in her prayer chamber, and whenever Zakariyya came in he found fruit with her, out of season. Where is this from? It is from Allah; He provides for whom He wills without account (3:37). Zakariyya was old and had been asking for a child for years. Standing there, he realized: if Allah gives her this from nowhere, He can give me a son. He asked on the spot, and the angels called him while he was still standing in prayer (3:38-39).

Ibrahim left his family in a valley with no crops. His dua asked first that they establish prayer, then that hearts would incline to them, and only then for fruits (14:37). He knew that connection to Allah is the provision that comes first. Qarun claimed his wealth came from his own knowledge (28:78), and the earth swallowed him with it.

Handing your affairs to Him

Headlines about layoffs and rising prices get into the heart. When you trust the lock, the job, the market, you will always be anxious, because those things are shaky. The Prophet ﷺ said that if you relied on Allah as He deserves, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds, which leave hungry in the morning and return full in the evening (at-Tirmidhi). The birds still fly out. Work hard, but put your trust in the One who feeds them.

This name changes four things. You become generous, because the money was never yours; it is His provision passing through you. You trust Him rather than people and systems. You ask boldly, because He gives without calculation. And you do not lose hope if you are poor, because wealth is a test, not a sign of His love, and the greatest provision, guidance, is open to everyone.

The email says your position has been made redundant, effective next month. Your stomach drops and you start calculating rent. Before you open the spreadsheet, pray two rak'ahs. The company was one door; Ar-Razzaq holds all of them, and He was feeding you before you ever had this job.

I see my income as the product of my effort, and its loss as the end of my security.

I see my income as rizq from Ar-Razzaq, delivered through my effort, and He has countless other doors.

Why the heart loves Him for it

Every meal you have eaten, every friend who stood by you, every moment of guidance was rizq placed in your hands without strings. When you see how long and how quietly He has been feeding you, love follows, and so does the wish to be His means of provision for someone else.

Call on Him

Ya Razzaq, provide for me what is good and lawful, provide me with guidance that never ends, and make me a means of Your provision for others.

Call on Him by this name when money worries keep you awake, and remember to ask for the wider rizq of faith, love and Paradise too.
Try this today

Give something today from what you feel you cannot spare, even a small amount, trusting that it was His provision to begin with.

Questions about Ar-Razzaq

What does Ar-Razzaq mean?

Ar-Razzaq means The Provider who provides constantly and abundantly for every creature. Rizq includes food and wealth but also guidance, love, knowledge, health and, for believers, Paradise.

How many times is Ar-Razzaq mentioned in the Quran?

In this exact form, Ar-Razzaq appears once, in 51:58: Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of strength, the Firm. Related phrases such as the best of providers appear several times, for example in 22:58 and 62:11.

What is the difference between Ar-Razzaq and Al-Wahhab?

Ar-Razzaq provides the sustenance every creature needs, a provision Allah has taken upon Himself for all. Al-Wahhab gives gifts, often unexpected and beyond what anyone needs or deserves, such as faith, children or a kingdom.

Does having less wealth mean Allah loves me less?

No. The Quran says Allah extends and restricts provision for whom He wills (17:30), and wealth and poverty are both tests. Richness in guidance and in the heart is the greater provision, and it is open to everyone.
