He turns to you first, so that you can turn back
The One who inspires repentance and accepts it every time
Who He is as At-Tawwab
At-Tawwab describes a turning on both sides. Before you ever turn back, He turns towards you: He places the discomfort in your heart, the sense that you cannot carry on like this. You turn back. Then He turns to you again with acceptance. The Quran describes it of the three companions who stayed behind from Tabuk: He turned to them so that they could repent, for He is At-Tawwab Ar-Raheem (9:118).
Who placed that thought in your heart one ordinary morning, that you cannot keep living this way? That is His turning. Sometimes He does it with hope and sometimes with a healthy fear, the realisation that actions have consequences. Both are mercies, because they turn you around.
The name is intensive. He does not accept repentance once and close the file; He accepts it every time the servant sincerely returns. Unlike people who grow weary of apologies, He loves those who keep returning, as the Quran says: Allah loves the tawwabin (2:222). The same word that describes Him describes the servant He loves.
Where you see At-Tawwab at work
The first repentance in human history was Adam's. He slipped, realised it, and did not know how to apologise. So Allah taught him the words, and accepted them, for He is At-Tawwab Ar-Raheem (2:37). Even the apology was His gift.
The Quran describes how deep a return can go. After naming some of the worst sins, it makes an exception for those who repent, believe and do righteous work: Allah will replace their bad deeds with good ones (25:70). Tawba is not only saying sorry. It is changing direction, and the fullest return replaces the old habit with a new one. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than a man in a desert who lost his camel with all his food and water, then found it standing beside him (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
Even at the height of victory, when people entered Islam in crowds, the Prophet ﷺ was told to glorify his Lord and seek His forgiveness, for He is Tawwab (110:3). Returning is not only for those who fell far; it is how the best of people finish their work.
Handing your affairs to Him
You may feel stuck in a habit with no way out. Waiting until you feel strong enough to repent is a trap; the strength itself comes from Him. Ask At-Tawwab to turn you, and take one step: one prayer, one deleted app, one honest conversation.
When you slip after repenting, do not decide your tawba was fake. Return again. Each sincere U-turn is received, and every bad deed you truly leave behind can become a source of good. Make the change concrete: replace what you drop with something better, so your return has somewhere to go.
You wake at 6am with a strange heaviness, tired of who you have become, and for once you mean it. That feeling is At-Tawwab turning towards you. Do not scroll past it. Get up, make wudu, pray two rakahs, and tell Him you are making the U-turn today.
I will repent properly once I have fixed myself and feel ready.
At-Tawwab is already turning me back; my part is to follow that pull today, however weak I feel.
Why the heart loves Him for it
Imagine leaving home in anger, and every time you think of coming back, finding the door already open and the light on. At-Tawwab is not only willing to receive you; He is pleased when you come, and He set out the way home before you thought of walking it.
Ya Tawwab, turn me back to You. Make my repentance sincere, accept it from me, and replace my bad deeds with good, for You are the Accepting, the Merciful.
Call on Him as At-Tawwab whenever you feel the pull to change; Adam's return began with words taught to him by Allah (2:37).Name one habit you want to leave and choose one specific good thing to put in its place starting today.
- الرَّحِيمُAr-RaheemAt-Tawwab Ar-Raheem: He turns the servant back and then receives him with mercy.
- الْغَفَّارُAl-GhaffarAt-Tawwab opens the way back and accepts it; Al-Ghaffar covers the sins of the one who returns, time after time.
- الْحَكِيمُAl-HakimAt-Tawwab Al-Hakim: His door of return is always open, and the way He sets it out is full of wisdom (24:10).
