No injustice goes unanswered, and every door to pardon stays open
Al-Muntaqim: the Avenger of wrongs, whose justice protects the wronged
Who He is as Al-Muntaqim
In the Quran, retribution is always tied to a specific group: the criminals, those who were reminded of His signs and turned away (32:22), those who persisted after warning. It is never random, never a reaction of temper, never more than the deed deserves. Your Lord does injustice to no one (18:49). Human revenge often overflows; His requital is exact.
That is why scholars note that this name is not used in the Quran on its own as an unrestricted title. It appears as Owner of Retribution, joined to Al-Aziz, the Almighty (3:4, 14:47, 39:37), and in the form We will take retribution from the criminals. Many scholars say it is best mentioned with its pair, as in the Pardoner and the Avenger, so the meaning stays whole.
The clearest example is 5:95: Allah has pardoned what is past; whoever returns, Allah will take retribution from him; and Allah is Almighty, Owner of Retribution. Pardon comes first. Retribution is for those who go back to the wrong knowingly, after the slate was wiped clean.
Where you see Al-Muntaqim at work
The stories of the prophets follow this pattern. Nuh warned his people for centuries; Pharaoh saw sign after sign. Only when they mocked, persisted and oppressed did the end come. We sent messengers before you with clear proofs, then We took retribution from those who committed crimes, and it was always Our duty to help the believers (30:47). Retribution against the oppressor and help for the oppressed are one act.
And for those who feel injustice has won: never think Allah will fail His promise to His messengers; Allah is Almighty, Owner of Retribution (14:47). The tyrant who dies in a palace has not escaped. Delay is not forgetfulness.
Handing your affairs to Him
If you have been wronged, cheated, abused or slandered, and there seems to be no court that will hear you, this name is for you. Al-Muntaqim forgets nothing. You can let go of the burning need for revenge, because the One who will settle the account is perfectly just and never misses. That frees you to forgive if you choose, or to seek justice calmly, without the poison of hatred.
If you are the one who has done wrong, this name is not a reason to despair. Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah's mercy; Allah forgives all sins (39:53). Retribution is for those who persist; repentance takes you out of its path. Turn back, repair what you can, and walk through the door that Al-Afuww holds open.
You read a news story about someone who hurt a child and walked free on a technicality. Your stomach turns and you feel the urge to rage online. No verdict on earth is the final one. Al-Muntaqim saw everything. Make dua for the victim, support those helping, and let the certainty of His justice settle your heart.
When people get away with cruelty, it feels as if justice simply does not exist.
Al-Muntaqim forgets nothing, and He warns and waits before He requites, so I can trust His justice and still hope for His pardon.
Why the heart loves Him for it
A world without consequences would be a world where the cruel always win. The heart loves Al-Muntaqim because His justice means every tear of the oppressed is counted, and because He gives even the guilty warning after warning before acting. His retribution is part of His goodness, not a contradiction of it.
O Allah, You are the Pardoner and the Owner of Retribution. Pardon what has passed from me and keep me from returning to it, take the rights of the wronged from those who oppressed them, and never let me be counted among the oppressors.
Calling on Him by His pardon and His justice together, as 5:95 joins them, keeps the heart between hope and awe.Think of someone who wronged you, and hand the matter to Allah in a short dua, asking Him to judge between you with justice and to free your heart from bitterness.
- العَفُوُّAl-AfuwwScholars mention the Avenger with the Pardoner: He wipes away what is past and requites only those who persist (5:95).
- الْعَزِيزُAl-AzizThe Quran names Him Almighty, Owner of Retribution (3:4, 14:47, 39:37): no wrongdoer can escape His justice.
- الْعَدْلُAl-AdlAl-Adl guarantees that His retribution is exact: never more than the deed, never against the innocent.
