The curse follows him until the Day of Recompense.

A refusal that does not stay in the past

How long it lasts
the cursedistance from mercy
until
the Day of Recompensewhen all is repaid
What a refusal becomes
one momentit is over now
a directionit keeps following

Ibn Kathir says Iblis was told he would be followed by a curse that would hound him until the Day of Resurrection. One refusal, never repented, became a lasting state. He never asks forgiveness in this scene.

A grudge you kept from school. A habit you never quit, first one cigarette, then years. What you refuse to undo keeps walking with you. The difference for you is that the door to repent is open.

That thing I did was long ago, it does not matter now.

An unrepented wrong does not stay in the past; it follows, unless I turn back.

Try this

Pick one old wrong you never asked forgiveness for, and ask Allah for it tonight.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir (shared passage from 15:34)

(Allah) said: "Then leave, for verily, you are an outcast. (34)"And verily, the curse shall be upon you until the Day of Recompense. (35)[Iblis] said: "O my Lord! Then give me respite until the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected. (36)Allah said: "Then verily, you are of those reprieved, (37)"Until the Day of the time appointed. (38)

The Expulsion of Iblis from Jannah, and His Reprieve until the Day of Resurrection

Allah tells us how He issued an unconditional command to Iblis to leave the position he held among the highest of heights. He told him that he was an outcast, i.e., cursed, and that he would be followed by a curse that would hound him until the Day of Resurrection. It was reported that Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "When Allah cursed Iblis, his image into something different from that of the angels, and he made a sound like a bell. Every bell that rings on this earth until the Day of Resurrection is part of that. This was reported by Ibn Abi Hatim.
