He asked for more time, not for forgiveness.

Expelled and cursed, Iblis speaks again. He says My Lord, reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected. He calls Allah his Lord, he knows who he is speaking to, and still he asks for time, not mercy.

You know the habit is wrong. You do not ask Allah to free you from it. You ask for a bit more time with it. Just one more year, then I will stop. Ask for the better thing.

I will deal with it later; I just need a little more time.

Asking for time to keep doing wrong is the opposite of asking to be forgiven.

Replace one I will stop later with a short dua today asking Allah to help you stop now.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir (shared passage from 15:34)

(Allah) said: "Then leave, for verily, you are an outcast. (34)"And verily, the curse shall be upon you until the Day of Recompense. (35)[Iblis] said: "O my Lord! Then give me respite until the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected. (36)Allah said: "Then verily, you are of those reprieved, (37)"Until the Day of the time appointed. (38)

The Expulsion of Iblis from Jannah, and His Reprieve until the Day of Resurrection

Allah tells us how He issued an unconditional command to Iblis to leave the position he held among the highest of heights. He told him that he was an outcast, i.e., cursed, and that he would be followed by a curse that would hound him until the Day of Resurrection. It was reported that Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "When Allah cursed Iblis, his image into something different from that of the angels, and he made a sound like a bell. Every bell that rings on this earth until the Day of Resurrection is part of that. This was reported by Ibn Abi Hatim.
