What they doubted for years was at the door.

What doubt changes
if I doubt itit will not come

The angels said we have come to you with that which they were doubting. Ibn Kathir explains they were bringing the punishment the people doubted they would ever suffer. Makkah too had been mocking the warning for years.

You keep putting off the check-up, the debt plan, the talk with your son, telling yourself it is not that serious. Doubting a consequence does not delay it. Better to act while it is still a warning.

If I do not think about it, it will not come.

What I doubt or ignore still arrives; my doubt changes only how ready I am.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir (shared passage from 15:61)

Then when the messengers (the angels) came to the family of Lu (61)He (Lut) said: "Verily, you are people unknown to me. (62)They said: "Nay, we have come to you with that (torment) which they have been doubting. (63)"And we have brought you the truth and certainly we tell the truth. (64)

The Angels coming to Lut

Allah tells us about when the angels came to Lut in the form of young men with handsome faces. When they entered his home, he said:

إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ - قَالُوا بَلْ جِئْنَاكَ بِمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ

("Verily, you are people unknown to me." They said: "Nay, we have come to you with that (torment) which they have been doubting.") meaning that they were bringing the punishment and destruction that the people doubted they would ever suffer from.

وَأَتَيْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ

(And we have brought you the truth) is like the Ayah,

مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ

(We do not send the angels down except with the truth)[15:8] and

وَإِنَّا لَصَادِقُونَ

(and certainly, we tell the truth.) They said this in affirmation of the news that they brought him, that he would be saved and his people would be destroyed.
