Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. That is the great attainment.

At-Tawbah · 9:89Madinah

What was prepared for those who went.

Gardens already waiting

Prepared in advance
those who gavein the hard season
find
gardensrivers flowing beneath
foreverthe great success
What the heat was worth
a hot journeyweeks of hardship
exchanged for
eternal shaderivers, forever

This completes the verse before. Ibn Kathir says these two verses describe the qualities and the reward of the faithful believers. Those who left the shade of Madinah for the heat find gardens prepared for them, the high grades of Paradise.

You give up the lie-in for Fajr, the weekend for your parents, the extra money for someone in need. It feels like loss at the time. The verse says something has already been prepared in return.

What I give up for Allah is simply gone.

What I give up is answered with something already prepared for me.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir (shared passage from 9:88)

But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove hard and fought with their wealth and their lives. Such are they for whom are the good things, and it is they who will be successful (88)For them Allah has prepared Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success (89)

After Allah mentioned the sins of the hypocrites, He praised the faithful believers and described their reward in the Hereafter,

لَٰكِنِ الرَّسُولُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ جَاهَدُوا

(But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove hard and fought) until the end of these two Ayat [9:88-89]. This describes the qualities, as well as, the reward of faithful believers. Allah said,

وَأُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمُ الْخَيْرَاتُ

(Such are they for whom are the good things), in the Hereafter, in the gardens of Al-Firdaws and the high grades.
