الْجَبَّارُ

Al-Jabbar · The Compeller

Al-Jabbar (الْجَبَّارُ) means the Compeller and the Restorer: the One whose will cannot be resisted, who is far above His creation, and who sets right what is broken, as a healer sets a bone. The same might that no tyrant can stand against is turned toward mending your heart, your circumstances and your losses.

Rootج ب رJabr in Arabic first means setting a broken bone, and by extension mending anything cracked, filling a gap, restoring the poor to sufficiency. It also means compelling someone against their resistance. A palm tree too tall for any hand to reach was called jabbara. All three pictures meet in Al-Jabbar: He mends, He prevails, and He is beyond reach.

Al-Jabbar in the Quran

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.

Who He is as Al-Jabbar

Many people meet the translation Compeller and flinch. But the first meaning of jabr is a healer's work: setting a fractured bone so it knits back stronger. Al-Jabbar is the One who mends every kind of brokenness: the poor are made sufficient, the frightened made safe, the grieving given comfort, the broken heart set right. And because He is also the Compeller, nothing can prevent that mending once He wills it.

The Compeller meaning is real too. His decree runs through all creation; no one can resist it, bargain with it or escape it. Yet this is the same as saying no oppressor can stop His justice and no illness can stop His cure. Scholars mention that names like this are understood alongside His mercy and wisdom: His overpowering will is never cruel, never random, never unjust.

Here is something striking. In the Quran, the word jabbar describes Allah only once, in 59:23, among His most beautiful names. Every other time it describes people, and always as blame: the tyrant who strikes without mercy (26:130), the arrogant who refuses the truth. Allah even told the Prophet ﷺ that he was not to be a jabbar over people (50:45). In a human, compelling others is a flaw that often hides an inner emptiness. In Allah, who lacks nothing, it is perfection.

Where you see Al-Jabbar at work

You see Al-Jabbar in the body itself: a broken bone left in a cast slowly fuses, skin closes over a wound, the mind recovers from shock. You did not design any of it. It is mending built into creation.

You see Him in the lives of the prophets. Yaqub lost Yusuf and wept until his eyes whitened, and decades later the family was restored in honor. Yunus was swallowed in darkness and brought back to shore. The Prophet ﷺ was driven from Makkah and returned to it in safety. Each was a broken thing set right, in a way no one could have forced.

And you see His other meaning when the arrogant are humbled: the nations that said nothing could touch them, the rulers who thought themselves beyond accountability. Al-Jabbar is above them all, and their power never once reached Him.

Handing your affairs to Him

Bring Him the parts of your life that feel shattered: a marriage that cracked, a dream that collapsed, a body that will not heal, a heart that has not recovered from someone's cruelty. Al-Jabbar specializes in what is broken. He can set it right, or set you right around it, so you come out stronger at the break.

Many Muslims say a short prayer between the two prostrations that includes the word wajburni, mend me, as reported by at-Tirmidhi. Say it slowly. You are asking the Compeller to use His irresistible will for your repair. And when you face someone who seems to have total power over you, remember that only One is truly Jabbar, and He is above them.

You sit in your car outside the hospital after the scan results, hands on the wheel, unable to start the engine. Everything feels cracked open. Al-Jabbar is the One who sets broken things, and nothing can stop Him once He wills it. Say: Ya Jabbar, mend me, and let Him carry what you cannot.

Some things in my life are broken for good, and nothing can fix them.

Al-Jabbar mends what is broken, and no force in creation can stand in the way of His repair.

Why the heart loves Him for it

Imagine a strength so complete that nothing can resist it, and then imagine that strength kneeling, as it were, to bind your wounds. That is the meaning the heart finds in Al-Jabbar. He does not use His might to frighten the broken; He uses it to gather their pieces. Who could not love a Power like that?

Call on Him

Ya Jabbar, You set what is broken and nothing resists Your will. Mend my heart, mend my affairs, mend what I have damaged in myself and others, and do not leave me to my own weakness.

Call on Al-Jabbar in moments of heartbreak, illness or helplessness, and between the two prostrations ask Him with the word wajburni, mend me.
Try this today

Think of someone you know who is going through something hard, and do one small thing today to help mend their day: a call, a meal, a kind word.

Questions about Al-Jabbar

What does Al-Jabbar mean?

Al-Jabbar means the Compeller and the Restorer. It comes from jabr, setting a broken bone. Scholars explain it with three meanings: the One who mends the broken and enriches the needy, the One whose will compels and cannot be resisted, and the One who is exalted far above His creation.

Is Al-Jabbar a scary name?

It should reassure believers. The same power that no one can resist is the power that mends hearts, heals bodies and restores lives. It frightens only oppressors, because it means their tyranny cannot escape His justice. Scholars read it alongside His mercy and wisdom.

How many times is Al-Jabbar mentioned in the Quran?

As a name of Allah, Al-Jabbar appears once, in 59:23. The word jabbar appears several other times describing people, always critically, for tyrants and the arrogant. What is a flaw in a needy creature is perfection in Allah, who needs nothing.

What is the difference between Al-Jabbar and Al-Qahhar?

Both describe overwhelming power. Al-Qahhar stresses subduing every creature so all must yield. Al-Jabbar adds the sense of setting right and restoring, from jabr, mending a fracture, as well as being exalted beyond reach.
