الْمُتَكَبِّرُ

Al-Mutakabbir · The Greatest

Al-Mutakabbir (الْمُتَكَبِّرُ) means The Supreme in Greatness: the One to whom all grandeur truly belongs, who is far above every flaw, injustice and likeness to His creation. In people, claiming greatness is a lie; in Allah, it is simply the truth. Knowing this name lifts the weight of pretending, and teaches the freedom of humility.

Rootك ب رThe root means being great or large. Kibr is seeing yourself as bigger than you are; takabbur is acting it out; kibriya is grandeur itself, the refusal to submit to anyone. The form mutakabbir means one who displays greatness. For a creature that greatness is borrowed and inflated. For Allah it is real, total and His alone.

Al-Mutakabbir in the Quran

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.

Who He is as Al-Mutakabbir

Al-Mutakabbir comes in the great list of names at the end of Surah al-Hashr, right after Al-Jabbar, and the verse then adds: exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him (59:23). He is supreme in greatness, and supreme above every defect: above injustice, above need, above weakness, above anything that resembles His creation. To Him belongs grandeur in the heavens and the earth (45:37).

This is the one name we are forbidden to imitate. Mercy, generosity and knowledge are qualities we are encouraged to reflect in our small way. Grandeur is not. In a hadith qudsi in Sahih Muslim, Allah describes might as His lower garment and grandeur as His cloak, and warns that whoever contends with Him in them will be punished. Pride is a creature trying to wear the King's robe.

Why is it beautiful in Him and ugly in us? Because for a person, greatness is a costume over dependence: we came from a drop of fluid, we need food, sleep and air, and we will return to dust. For Allah, nothing is borrowed. His greatness is not a performance and not a reaction to rivals. It is simply who He is.

Where you see Al-Mutakabbir at work

The Quran shows what happens when creatures reach for His cloak. Iblis refused to bow, saying he was better than Adam. Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and claimed lordship. Both were brought low by the very pride they leaned on. The pattern repeats in every age: the unsinkable ship, the invincible empire, the person who thinks they no longer need God.

You also see it in what Islam builds into a believer's day. Prayer begins with Allahu Akbar, and its highest point is the forehead on the ground. The Prophet ﷺ said, as reported in Sahih Muslim, that no one with an atom's weight of pride in his heart will enter Paradise, and he defined pride as rejecting the truth and looking down on people. Wanting nice clothes, he explained, is not pride; Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.

Handing your affairs to Him

Pride is exhausting. You have to keep up an image, win every argument, never admit a mistake, compare yourself constantly. When you accept that greatness belongs to Al-Mutakabbir alone, you can put that weight down. You can say sorry, ask for help, learn from someone younger, and be happy for others without feeling smaller.

This name also comforts when you are on the receiving end of arrogance: the relative who belittles you, the boss who treats you as nothing. Their swagger is borrowed and temporary. The only true greatness in the room is His, and He is the One who sees how you were treated. You do not need to out-shout them; you need to stay humble and let Him handle the rest.

You have just posted something online and you keep checking the likes, a little proud, a little anxious. A sharp comment appears and your face goes hot. Grandeur was never yours to protect; it is His cloak. Close the app, admit what was right in the criticism, and feel how light it is not to need to be great.

I need to look impressive, be right and never appear small in front of others.

Only Al-Mutakabbir is truly great, so I am free to be humble, honest and at peace.

Why the heart loves Him for it

There is deep rest in loving someone whose greatness is real. You never have to wonder whether it is a front. And though He alone is supreme, He comes closest to you exactly when you lower yourself in prostration. The heart loves Al-Mutakabbir because He is great enough to need nothing from you, and generous enough to draw you near when you bow.

Call on Him

Ya Mutakabbir, all greatness is Yours and none of it is mine. Remove every atom of pride from my heart, make me humble with people and humble before the truth, and raise me only in Your sight.

Call on this name when you notice pride rising, after praise or success, and recite the end of Surah al-Hashr (59:22-24), where it appears among His greatest names.

Questions about Al-Mutakabbir

What does Al-Mutakabbir mean?

Al-Mutakabbir means the Supreme in Greatness. It describes Allah as the One to whom all grandeur belongs, who is exalted above every flaw, injustice and likeness to His creation. It is mentioned in 59:23 among His most beautiful names.

Why is arrogance bad if Allah is called Al-Mutakabbir?

Because grandeur fits only the One who is truly great and needs no one. A human being is dependent and limited, so pride is a false claim. In a hadith qudsi in Sahih Muslim, grandeur is described as Allah's cloak, and whoever contends with Him for it is punished.

What is the difference between Al-Kabir and Al-Mutakabbir?

Al-Kabir describes Allah as the Most Great in His essence and attributes, greater than anything imaginable. Al-Mutakabbir stresses that grandeur belongs exclusively to Him, that He is far above every defect, and that no creature may claim it.

Is it pride to want nice clothes?

No. In Sahih Muslim the Prophet ﷺ was asked exactly this and replied that Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. He defined pride as rejecting the truth and looking down on people. The problem is a heart that feels above others, not a clean, beautiful appearance.
