الْخَافِضُ

Al-Khafid · The Abaser

Al-Khafid (الخافض) means the Abaser, the One who lowers: He brings down the arrogant, the oppressor and falsehood, in this life or the next, always with perfect justice. For anyone who has been looked down on it is a comfort, not a threat, and for the ego in each of us it is a gentle warning.

Rootخ ف ضKhafd is to lower or bring down: lowering the voice, lowering a wing, low-lying land. In Arabic grammar it names the case that brings a word's ending down. The picture is of something that stood high being set low, whether it falls by force or bends down gently by choice.

Al-Khafid in the Quran

Who He is as Al-Khafid

Al-Khafid is the One who lowers. He brings down those who raise themselves against Him and against His creation: the arrogant, the tyrant, the person who builds a name on other people's backs. The Prophet ﷺ described Allah as the One who lowers the scale and raises it (Sahih Muslim): every rise and fall in the world is in His hand. This name is narrated in the well-known list of names in Jami' al-Tirmidhi, and scholars stress that it should be said together with Ar-Rafi', the One who raises.

His lowering is never random and never unjust. He does not bring anyone down for being poor, plain or unknown. He brings down what deserves to fall: pride, oppression, the lie dressed up as truth. Even this is mercy. Unchecked tyranny would crush the weak, so His lowering protects the world. And sometimes it is mercy for the one who falls, when losing status breaks an arrogance that would otherwise have ruined their Hereafter.

People lower one another out of envy and rivalry. Allah has no rival and envies no one; He lowers as a just judge gives a verdict, with full knowledge. He created the human being in the finest form, then returns him to the lowest of the low, except those who believe and do good (95:4-6). The lowness He describes there is the place a person drifts to when they turn away from Him.

Where you see Al-Khafid at work

Surat al-Waqi'ah opens by describing the Day of Resurrection as the event that brings some down and raises others up (56:1-3). Kings who were obeyed without question will stand with nothing. People nobody noticed will be lifted. History already gives small previews: Pharaoh called himself the highest lord and ended under the waves.

Think of the oppressors who stood over the bodies of prophets and believers, sure that they had won. Their power had an expiry date they could not see. The Prophet ﷺ also said that Allah raises some people by this Book and lowers others by it (Sahih Muslim). The same Quran lifts the one who lives by it and lowers the one who turns his back on it. The ranking that counts is not the world's ranking.

Handing your affairs to Him

If someone has humiliated you, whether a manager, a relative or a whole system, you do not have to carry the job of revenge. Al-Khafid sees everything. You can leave the bringing down to Him and keep your own hands clean. His timing may not match yours. He is not unaware of what the wrongdoers do; He only gives them time (14:42).

Then turn the name inward, gently. Where am I raising myself? A sharp comment, quiet contempt for someone less educated, a need to be seen as better. The ego that climbs on other people is the first thing Al-Khafid brings down. The safest place is low before Him in prostration. The Prophet ﷺ said that no one humbles himself for Allah except that Allah raises him (Sahih Muslim).

A colleague presents your work as their own in the meeting and everyone nods along. Your face burns on the walk back to your desk. Al-Khafid saw the whole thing, and no stolen height lasts with Him. Write down the facts calmly, speak up fairly if you can, and let go of needing to see them fall today.

When arrogant people win, I feel the world simply rewards whoever pushes hardest.

Every false height is temporary, because Allah lowers pride and oppression with perfect justice in His own time.

Why the heart loves Him for it

A world without Al-Khafid would belong to the loudest and the cruellest. Because He lowers, the weak have a defender, the slandered will be cleared, and no tyrant has the final word. You love Him the way you love a just protector who stands between you and those who would trample you. And because He raises those who lower themselves to Him, the way up is open to everyone.

Call on Him

Ya Khafid, Ya Rafi', lower the pride in my heart before it lowers me, protect me from the arrogance of others, and raise me through humility before You.

Call on Him by this name together with Ar-Rafi', especially when you are wronged by the powerful or notice pride rising in yourself.
Try this today

Do one thing today that lowers your ego on purpose: admit a mistake out loud, or thank someone you usually overlook.
