The hand that opens wider than you dared to ask
Al-Basit: the One who spreads out provision, joy, and His hand for your return
Who He is as Al-Basit
Al-Basit spreads things out. He widens a person's provision, gives room in a chest that felt crushed, makes time feel spacious, and opens a door that seemed bricked shut. The Quran says that Allah extends provision for whom He wills (13:26), and the Prophet ﷺ named Him Al-Basit beside Al-Qabid when he spoke about prices and provision (Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami' al-Tirmidhi). Every widening in your life, of money, of breath, of hope, is His hand opening.
His extending is unlike human generosity. People give and then run out, or give and then remind you. Allah's hand is full and giving does not reduce it. He also extends with knowledge. He gives some people more of this world than others, and then reminds us that the Hereafter holds far greater differences in rank (17:21). A wide world is a test to be used well, not a medal that proves you are loved more.
The sweetest form of this name is the open hand of forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah stretches out His hand at night so that the one who sinned by day may repent, and stretches it out by day so that the one who sinned by night may repent, until the sun rises from the west (Sahih Muslim). However far you have gone, the hand is already held out to you.
Where you see Al-Basit at work
Watch spring arrive on ground that looked dead all winter, and green spreads out in every direction. Feel a body loosen when a fever finally breaks, or a city exhale when the rain comes after a long drought. Expansion after constriction is written into the world He made.
Allah's provision has no ceiling, so one person's opening never takes from another's. That frees a believer to give generously and to take careful risks for honest work. Each person's widening also comes through a different door: one through knowledge, one through trade, one through caring for family. Do not stare at someone else's door. Walk through the one He opened for you.
Yusuf went from a well to slavery to prison, and then Allah widened his life so far that he later said his Lord had been good to him when He brought him out of prison (12:100). The tight years were real, and so was the spreading out that followed.
Handing your affairs to Him
When you are in a narrow place, whether debt, illness or loneliness, remember the narrowing came from the hand that also spreads. Ask Him by this name. Keep knocking, keep working, keep asking. Despair whispers that the tightness is forever. Al-Basit means closing and opening are both in His hand, and He loves to open for those who turn to Him.
When He does widen things for you, this name protects you a second time. You know the extra was spread out by Him, not earned by your own cleverness, so you share it and stay humble. Gratitude keeps the hand that opened in your heart, instead of the thing it gave.
The rejection email arrives on a Thursday afternoon, the third one this month. You sit in the car park with the engine off and the world feels very narrow. Al-Basit has opened far tighter places than this one. Before you drive home, ask Him by name to widen your way, then send one more application.
When a door closes, I picture my options shrinking until there is nothing left for me.
The One who closed this door spreads out provision and hope as He wills, and He has not run out of doors.
Why the heart loves Him for it
Think of someone who once made room for you at a crowded table when you were standing alone. You never forgot them. Allah makes room for you constantly: in your chest when grief presses down, in your days when deadlines squeeze, in a future when you cannot see one. The heart cannot help loving the One who keeps opening space for it.
Ya Basit, spread out my provision, widen my chest, and keep Your hand of forgiveness open to me whenever I return. Make whatever You extend to me a means of coming closer to You.
Call on Him by this name together with Al-Qabid, especially when life feels narrow, remembering that His hand is stretched out for repentance night and day.Make room for someone today: a seat, a gap in traffic, or ten minutes to really listen, the way Allah makes room for you.
- الْقَابِضُAl-QabidHe holds back and He spreads out: one wise hand, which is why the two names are always said together.
- الْوَاسِعُAl-Wasi'Al-Wasi is His limitless vastness; Al-Basit is that vastness reaching out to widen your life.
- التَّوَابُAt-TawwabHis hand is stretched out for repentance, and At-Tawwab is the One who turns back to the one who returns.
