الْقَابِضُ

Al-Qabid · The Constrictor

Al-Qabid (القابض) means the Withholder: the One who holds back or tightens provision, contracts hearts, and takes souls at their appointed time, always by knowledge and wisdom. Knowing Him turns a tight season from a sign of rejection into a careful hand that is shaping you.

Rootق ب ضQabd is to close the hand around something and hold it: fingers gathering in, a fist closing over coins. From it come holding back, contracting and narrowing, and the taking of a soul at death. The picture is a hand that grips, not a hand that has let go.

Al-Qabid in the Quran

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.

Who He is as Al-Qabid

Al-Qabid is the One who holds back. The Quran says plainly that it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance (2:245), and when people once asked the Prophet ﷺ to fix prices for them, he said that Allah is the One who sets prices, the Withholder, the Extender, the Provider (Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami' al-Tirmidhi). He tightens provision, He lets a heart feel narrow and heavy, and He takes each soul when its term is complete. Nothing is held back from you by accident or by stinginess; it is held back by a hand that knows exactly what it is doing.

Scholars advise that this name should not be mentioned on its own. Al-Qabid is said together with Al-Basit, the One who extends, because the two describe one complete control: the hand that closes is the same hand that opens. When a person withholds, it is usually from fear of running out, from meanness or from anger. Picturing Allah withholding like a reluctant person is the real mistake. His treasures never shrink. When He holds back, the holding is better for you than the giving would have been.

He tells us that if He had spread provision out to His servants without measure, they would have transgressed on the earth, so He sends it down in the amount He wills, and He is fully aware of His servants and sees them (42:27). The withholding is a form of care that is very hard to see from the inside.

Where you see Al-Qabid at work

You see Al-Qabid all through creation. The tree in winter pulls its life down into its roots so that the frost does not kill it. The lungs must empty before they can fill again. The sea draws back before the tide comes in. Contraction is not the opposite of life; it is part of how life is protected.

In the Quran this name comes straight after an invitation to give: who will lend Allah a good loan, which He will multiply many times over? Then: Allah withholds and extends (2:245). The message is gentle and sharp at once. Do not hold back from giving out of fear of poverty, because how much you have was never in your own grip. When Qarun was swallowed by the earth, the very people who had envied his riches said that Allah extends and restricts provision for whom He wills (28:82).

The heart has seasons too. There are times when prayer feels dry and the chest feels tight, and times when worship is sweet and easy. Both come from Him. The tight seasons often humble you, strip away self-reliance, and send you back to His door with real need.

Handing your affairs to Him

When money is tight, when the offer goes to someone else, when your heart feels flat, tell yourself: this is held, not lost. The One who holds it has not forgotten it. Do your part: budget wisely, apply again, keep working. Then leave the outcome with Him. People are given different portions, and each portion is chosen. You are freed from envying the person who has more, because their share and yours came from the same wise hand.

This name also covers the taking of souls. When someone you love dies, Al-Qabid took them at the exact moment their term ended, not a breath early and not a breath late. They were gathered into the care of the One who is more merciful to them than you are. That does not remove the grief, but it can remove the torment of asking what if.

It is the 26th, and your banking app shows forty-three until payday. You scroll past a friend's holiday photos and feel the squeeze in your chest. Al-Qabid set this month's measure with full knowledge of you, and the One who measured it is also the One who opens. Close the app, say alhamdulillah for what is there, and ask Him for what is not.

When money or joy runs low, I assume I have done something wrong or that Allah has turned away from me.

When He holds back, He is measuring for me with wisdom, and the same hand will open when opening is good for me.

Why the heart loves Him for it

A parent who never says no is not loving; they are exhausted. A parent who holds back sweets before dinner and the car keys until the child is ready is loving with open eyes. Allah's holding back is the love of One who sees the whole road. When you see that every not now from Him is careful and measured, you start to love Him even in the thin months. And because He is Al-Qabid, every closing in His plan is waiting for the opening of Al-Basit.

Call on Him

Ya Qabid, Ya Basit, when You hold back from me, give me patience and contentment, and when You open, give me gratitude. Do not let my heart close around what You have given me.

Call on Him by this name together with Al-Basit, especially in tight months and dry seasons of the heart, asking for contentment instead of complaint.

Questions about Al-Qabid

What does Al-Qabid mean?

Al-Qabid means the Withholder or the Constrictor. Allah holds back or tightens provision, contracts hearts, and takes souls at their appointed time. He does this with perfect knowledge and wisdom, never out of stinginess, and the name is always mentioned together with Al-Basit, the One who extends.

Why is Al-Qabid always mentioned with Al-Basit?

Scholars advise saying these two names together because withholding on its own could suggest something incomplete. Together they show complete control: Allah tightens and widens as He wills (2:245). The perfection lies in the pairing: His closing is wise and His opening is generous.

Is Al-Qabid mentioned in the hadith?

Yes. When people asked the Prophet ﷺ to fix prices, he said that Allah is the One who sets prices, Al-Qabid, Al-Basit, Ar-Razzaq. The hadith is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud and Jami' al-Tirmidhi, and the Quran uses the matching verbs: Allah withholds and extends (2:245).
