Al-Qawiyy · The Possessor of all strength

Al-Qawiyy (الْقَوِيُّ) means The All-Strong: Allah has perfect, unlimited strength that never weakens, never tires and always accomplishes what He intends. Every ounce of strength in creation is borrowed from Him. Knowing this name turns la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah from a phrase into a source of real courage.

Rootق و يQuwwa is strength: the capacity to carry out what you intend. The Arabs called someone qawiyy when they had more than ordinary strength in body, mind or means. Its opposite, da'if, is the one who wants to lift the load but cannot. Al-Qawiyy is the One whose every intention is carried out, with no gap between willing and doing.

Al-Qawiyy in the Quran

[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, "Our Lord is Allah." And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

Allah is Subtle with His servants; He gives provisions to whom He wills. And He is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.

We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people, and so that Allah may make evident those who support Him and His messengers unseen. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

Who He is as Al-Qawiyy

Strength, in Arabic, is the ability to do what you intend. Humans always have a gap: we intend to lift the furniture, finish the project, quit the habit, and fall short. Al-Qawiyy has no gap. Whatever He intends is done, fully, without effort, fatigue or help. His strength is not like physical strength; it is not built up, does not decline, and has no ceiling.

Every strength in creation comes from Him. The Quran praises some creatures for strength: Jibril is described as mighty in power, and the woman of Madyan recommended Musa as strong and trustworthy. The Prophet ﷺ said, as reported in Sahih Muslim, that the strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both. Strength is a gift. It becomes a trap only when we forget whose it is.

Al-Qawiyy is almost always paired in the Quran with Al-Aziz (22:40, 22:74, 42:19, 58:21). Al-Qawiyy is the strength itself; Al-Aziz is the invincibility and honor that strength brings. Al-Matin, a close name, adds that this strength is firm and unwavering, never slackening.

Where you see Al-Qawiyy at work

The Quran gives a humbling test. Everything people call on besides Allah could never create a fly, even if they all gathered for it, and if a fly snatched something from them they could not take it back. Weak are the seeker and the sought. They have not valued Allah as He deserves; Allah is All-Strong, Almighty (22:73-74). In our age the lesson came as a virus invisible to the eye, and the most advanced nations shut their doors.

The prophets lived this name. Lut, surrounded by a mob, cried out that he wished he had strength or a strong support (11:80), and Al-Qawiyy answered for him. Musa reached the sea with an army behind him and said: no, my Lord is with me, He will guide me (26:62). A shepherd's stick split the sea, not because of the stick but because of the One behind it.

Handing your affairs to Him

The Prophet ﷺ called la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, there is no power and no strength except through Allah, a treasure from the treasures of Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). Say it before the job interview, the hard conversation, the hospital appointment, the exam: you are plugging into strength that does not run out.

This does not make you passive. You still train, study and plan; the strong believer is beloved. But your confidence rests on Al-Qawiyy, not on the tools, so losing a tool does not destroy you. Weakness also becomes a door: the moment you admit you cannot, you are finally asking the One who can.

You are about to walk into a meeting where you know you will be outnumbered and talked over. Your hands are cold. Then walk in: your strength in that room is borrowed from Al-Qawiyy, and He does not lend weakly.

I am only as strong as my skills, my money and the people backing me.

All strength belongs to Al-Qawiyy; I use the means, but my confidence rests on Him.

Why the heart loves Him for it

Children feel safe beside a strong parent. Believers feel safe beside Al-Qawiyy, whose strength is never used to bully, always to protect, provide and uphold justice. The heart loves Him because His limitless strength is on the side of the weak who turn to Him.

Call on Him

Ya Qawiyy, there is no power and no strength except through You. Strengthen my body for Your obedience, my heart against fear, and my faith against doubt, and never leave me to my own weakness.

Call on Al-Qawiyy whenever you feel outmatched, together with la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, which the Prophet ﷺ called a treasure of Paradise.

Say la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah before each difficult task today, and notice how it changes the way you start.
