الْمَتِينُ

Al-Matin · The Forceful

Al-Matin (الْمَتِينُ) means The Firm, the Steadfast in strength: Allah's strength is so intense and steady that it never slackens, never tires and never wavers, holding up the heavens, the earth and every provision without pause. When everything you lean on bends or snaps, this name tells you the One you depend on never will.

Rootم ت نMatn is the back, the spine, and also hard, raised ground. From it comes matin: firm, solid, robust, like a rope that will not fray or a structure that will not buckle. Matin describes strength that holds under load. Applied to Allah, it is strength of perfect, unbroken firmness.

Al-Matin in the Quran

Indeed, it is Allah who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.

Who He is as Al-Matin

Al-Matin appears once in the Quran, at the end of a short and striking passage: I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me. I want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me. Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of strength, the Firm (51:56-58). He provides for every creature and needs nothing from any of them, and the strength behind that provision never weakens.

Where Al-Qawiyy describes the completeness of His strength, Al-Matin describes its firmness: intense, steady, unwavering. Human strength comes in bursts and then fades; it needs rest, food and sleep. Allah is described as One whom neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes (2:255), who created the heavens and the earth and was touched by no weariness (50:38), and who holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease (35:41).

The same root describes His plan against those who persistently deny: I give them time; My plan is firm (7:183, 68:45). Delay is not weakness. The rope He extends to the arrogant is long, and it does not break when He draws it in.

Where you see Al-Matin at work

Every second, without your noticing, the earth turns at the right speed, the sun keeps burning, your lungs keep drawing breath and your heart keeps beating through the night. None of it pauses for maintenance. That relentless, silent steadiness is the signature of Al-Matin.

And every day, billions of creatures are fed: the ant in its tunnel, the bird that leaves its nest hungry, the newborn in a refugee tent. The verse that names Him Al-Matin calls Him first the Provider. The firmness of His strength is why provision never runs dry at the source.

Handing your affairs to Him

We all lean on things that eventually give way. A job that felt secure, a body that used to be strong, a friend who always picked up. When they bend, the ground seems to move. Al-Matin is the one support that never shifts. Lean your full weight on Him, and it will hold.

This name also speaks to people worried about provision. The One who said He wants no provision from you is the Provider with firm, unflagging strength. Your rizq is not held up by your boss's mood or the market; it is upheld by Al-Matin. Work hard, and leave the anxiety at His door. The Quran calls faith grasping the firmest handhold, which never breaks (2:256).

It is the end of a brutal week: the car broke down, your mother is unwell, and work demanded everything. You are running on empty and feel guilty for having nothing left. Your strength was always meant to run out; His never does. Before bed, say: Ya Matin, I am exhausted; carry what I cannot.

If I stop holding everything together, it will all collapse.

Al-Matin holds the heavens without tiring; I can rest and let His firm strength carry what I cannot.

Why the heart loves Him for it

There is a particular love we feel for the person who never lets us down, who is there at 3am as much as at noon. Al-Matin is that in perfection: never tired of you, never worn down by your requests, never weaker today than yesterday. The heart that knows Him stops bracing for abandonment.

Call on Him

Ya Matin, Your strength never tires and Your hold never slips. When my strength fails, uphold me; when my supports give way, be my support; and keep me firm on Your path until I meet You.

Call on Al-Matin when you are exhausted or anxious about provision, recalling 51:58, where He is the Provider, the Possessor of firm strength.
Try this today
