الْقَيُّومُ

Al-Qayyum · The Self Existing

Al-Qayyum (الْقَيُّومُ) means the Self-Sustaining Sustainer: Allah exists by Himself, needs nothing, and holds up, maintains and manages everything else at every moment without tiring. It matters to you because the things you fear losing are already being held, and not by you.

Rootق و مQama means to stand. A guard who stands and walks around is more alert than one sitting down; a creditor who keeps standing over you is pressing for his due. Qawwam is one who constantly maintains and looks after. Qayyum is a rarer, stronger form: standing over everything without one moment of slack.

Al-Qayyum in the Quran

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Who He is as Al-Qayyum

Al-Qayyum has two sides. He is self-subsisting: He exists by Himself and depends on nothing. And He sustains everything else: the heavens, the earth and every soul stand only because He holds them up. If He let go for an instant, there would be nothing. Allah holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease, and if they ceased, no one could hold them after Him (35:41).

Right after naming Himself Al-Hayy al-Qayyum, Ayat al-Kursi adds: neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him (2:255). The word sinah is that heavy-eyed moment on a motorway at midnight when your eyes close for a second; nawm is deep sleep. Every human caretaker has those moments: the night guard asleep at his desk, the exhausted mother, the tired father. Al-Qayyum never has even the first one.

Al-Hayy describes His perfect life. Al-Qayyum describes what that life does: it carries the weight of all existence. He is the One standing over every soul, aware of what it earns (13:33).

Where you see Al-Qayyum at work

You notice Al-Qayyum most when a small part of the system fails. Break your little finger and suddenly you realise how much you needed it to write, grip and cook. Fall ill and you discover the blessing of the health you never thought about. Gravity has not paused once since you were born. None of this runs itself; He maintains it.

The Quran says there is no creature on earth whose provision is not upon Allah, and He knows where it rests and where it is kept (11:6). The Prophet ﷺ said, as reported in Jami' at-Tirmidhi, that if you relied on Allah as He deserves, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds, which leave hungry in the morning and return full in the evening.

Handing your affairs to Him

Here is a freeing way to see your life: nothing you have is owned, it is on lease. Your health, your house, your income, even your children are held up by Al-Qayyum and can be recalled by Him at any time. That sounds frightening until you see the other side: you do not have to hold it all up yourself.

Many people lie awake running numbers: rent, rising prices, a business month that may not cover costs. Some even prefer conspiracy theories, because at least then someone is in control. The truth is better: Someone is, and He never sleeps. Do the work, take the means, then leave the outcome with Al-Qayyum. Working hard is your job; holding up the world is His.

It is the last week of the month, the business account is thin, and you are lying awake rehearsing worst cases. You have done what you can today. Say the morning and evening dua: Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, set right all my affairs and do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye. Then sleep. He is not sleeping.

If I stop worrying for a moment, everything I have built will fall apart.

Al-Qayyum holds up everything I have; I do my part and rest, because He never does.

Why the heart loves Him for it

We feel tender toward whoever carried us when we could not stand: the parent who held us as babies, the friend who got us through a breakdown. Al-Qayyum has carried you every second of your life, through every heartbeat you never thought about, without once growing tired of you. When you see that, love comes easily, and so does shame at how rarely you have thanked Him.

Call on Him

Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, by Your mercy I seek help. Set right all my affairs, and do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye.

The Prophet ﷺ taught this to Fatimah to say morning and evening; it is reported by an-Nasa'i and al-Hakim.
