Granted time is not the same as approval.

Why Iblis was given a reprieve

The answer
Allahgrants the request
you are
among the reprievedtime, not favor
What a delay means
nothing happenedso I must be fine
a reprievestill under the curse

Allah grants it: you are of those reprieved. Ibn Kathir calls it a reprieve until the Day of Resurrection. The curse from two verses before still stands. Iblis gets time, not approval.

You did something wrong last month and nothing bad happened. No one found out. Life went on. It is easy to read that as permission. A delay is not a verdict.

If nothing bad happened, it must not have been that wrong.

Being given time is a test, not a sign that Allah is pleased.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir (shared passage from 15:34)

(Allah) said: "Then leave, for verily, you are an outcast. (34)"And verily, the curse shall be upon you until the Day of Recompense. (35)[Iblis] said: "O my Lord! Then give me respite until the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected. (36)Allah said: "Then verily, you are of those reprieved, (37)"Until the Day of the time appointed. (38)

The Expulsion of Iblis from Jannah, and His Reprieve until the Day of Resurrection

Allah tells us how He issued an unconditional command to Iblis to leave the position he held among the highest of heights. He told him that he was an outcast, i.e., cursed, and that he would be followed by a curse that would hound him until the Day of Resurrection. It was reported that Sa'id bin Jubayr said: "When Allah cursed Iblis, his image into something different from that of the angels, and he made a sound like a bell. Every bell that rings on this earth until the Day of Resurrection is part of that. This was reported by Ibn Abi Hatim.
