What kind of book begins with the word "Read"?
Today
The Quran is the speech of Allah as Muslims understand it: revealed in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the angel Jibril over about 23 years, then recited, memorised and written down.
It is not arranged like a history book or a novel. It has 114 surahs (chapters) of very different lengths, divided for reading into 30 equal parts called juz. Today you will see its shape, how it arrived, and what it says about itself.
What the Quran says
Recite in the name of your Lord who created - Created man from a clinging substance. Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - Who taught by the pen - Taught man that which he knew not.
Context Revealed in the cave of Hira, near Makkah, around 610 CE.
The first command is to read, in the name of the Lord who creates and teaches. Knowledge and worship begin together.
That these were the very first verses comes from hadith reports in al-Bukhari and Muslim; the verses themselves do not say so.
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. …
Context From the verses on fasting. Surah al-Qadr (97:1) adds that it came down on the Night of Decree.
The Quran names its own purpose: guidance, clear proofs, and a criterion to tell right from wrong.
And [it is] a Qur'an which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.
Context Answers the objection that a real revelation would arrive all at once (see also 25:32).
It was sent down in stages over many years, so it could be recited, absorbed and lived step by step.
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
Context A Makkan surah, revealed while the message was still mocked and its believers were few.
Allah takes the preservation of the Quran upon Himself. Muslims see this in its unbroken memorisation and its written copies.
See it
Pins: al-Baqarah (longest), al-'Alaq (first revealed), al-Kawthar (shortest, 3 verses).
All 114 surahs in mushaf order, sized by their number of verses. Gold marks surahs revealed in Makkah, teal those revealed in Madinah. The long Madinan surahs come first; the short Makkan ones gather at the end.
The key word
hudā · Guidance
Not just information but direction that leads somewhere. The Quran calls itself hudā for those who are conscious of Allah (2:2). The same root gives hadiyyah, a gift, and al-Hādī, the Guide.
2:217:9A common mix-up
The Quran was written as one book, start to finish, in the order we read it.
It came down in parts over about 23 years, often in answer to real events. The first verses revealed (96:1-5) sit near the end of the mushaf. The order of verses within each surah was set by the Prophet ﷺ; scholars differ on whether the order of the surahs was too. The written pages were gathered under Abu Bakr and copied into one standard text under 'Uthman.
17:10625:32Remember
Carry one verse
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
