Who is the One the Quran calls Allah?
Today
Every page of the Quran points back to one theme: Allah is One. The Arabic word for this is tawhid. It means more than counting to one. There is no creator, ruler or object of worship beside Him, and nothing in creation is like Him.
The Quran introduces Allah mostly through His names: the Entirely Merciful, the Knower, the Ever-Living. It invites people to call on Him by them (7:180). Ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim both come from rahmah, mercy. Many scholars explain the first as mercy vast enough to hold all creation, and the second as mercy that reaches people, especially believers.
Later scholars sorted tawhid into His lordship, His sole right to worship, and His names and attributes. That grouping is a teaching tool, not a verse, and some schools group it differently. Today you will read the passages it was built from.
What the Quran says
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent."
Context A short Makkan surah. A hadith in al-Bukhari says it is equal to a third of the Quran.
Allah is One, the Eternal Refuge every creature needs. He has no parent, no child and no equal.
Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. …
Context Known as Ayat al-Kursi. A hadith in Muslim calls it the greatest verse in the Quran.
Allah lives without end and holds all things in being. He never tires or sleeps, knows everything, and no one intercedes without His permission.
He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Context The close of al-Hashr, a Madinan surah, which gathers more of Allah's names in one place than almost any other passage.
Names of power, like the Compeller, sit beside names of care, like the Bestower of Faith. He is exalted above any partner people assign Him.
[He is] Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you from yourselves, mates, and among the cattle, mates; He multiplies you thereby. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
Context From ash-Shura, a Makkan surah. Scholars of every school use it as the key for reading Allah's attributes.
Nothing is like Him, and yet He is the Hearing, the Seeing. The verse denies any likeness and affirms real attributes in the same breath.

Read around the circle from the top. A hadith qudsi in Muslim divides al-Fatihah between Allah and His servant: praise first, then a shared verse, then the servant's request. Scholars differ on whether the Bismillah counts as its first verse.
The key word
tawḥīd · Affirming that Allah is One
From wahhada, to make one or declare one. The noun tawhid is not in the Quran, but its root is everywhere: wahid, one (2:163), and ahad, the unique One (112:1). Tawhid is not only a belief held in the mind; it means directing all worship to Him alone.
2:163112:1A common mix-up
"Allah" is the name of a separate god worshipped only by Muslims.
Allah is the Arabic word for God, the One God. Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews use it too, and Arabic Bibles use it. The Quran tells believers to say to the People of the Book: "Our God and your God is one" (29:46). Where faiths differ is in how He is described, for example on whether He has a son (112:3).
29:46112:3Remember
Carry one verse
And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
