What does it take to stand before a tyrant, and then lead a freed people?
Day 10 · Musa
1 / 10Day 10
What does it take to stand before a tyrant, and then lead a freed people?
Today
Musa (Moses) is named in the Quran more often than any other prophet. His life runs from a river to a palace, a desert, a fire on a mountain and a sea split in two. He faced Pharaoh, the Quran's clearest picture of a tyrant, and then the long work of guiding a freed people who often doubted.
His story also carries the stories of his community: the covenant at the mountain, the calf, the cow they argued over, and Qarun, ruined by pride in his wealth. Later comes a town that broke the Sabbath (7:163). The Quran tells all this to the Prophet ﷺ and his followers as a mirror: freedom is a gift, and a covenant is a trust to keep.
What the Quran says
And We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and will make him [one] of the messengers."
Context Pharaoh was killing the newborn sons of the Children of Israel (28:4).
A mother is told to do the unthinkable and given two promises: he will return to her, and he will be a messenger. 28:13 shows the first kept.
Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed. And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]."
Context Musa and his brother Harun (Aaron) are sent to Pharaoh, who claimed "I am your most exalted lord" (79:24).
Even to a tyrant, the command is gentle speech, in the hope that he may remember. The method is mercy, not contempt.
And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!" [Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me." Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.
Context Pharaoh's army pursues the Israelites to the sea at sunrise (26:60).
Trapped, his people panic. Musa answers with certainty, "with me is my Lord", and the sea parts like towering mountains.
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], "Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah." Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
Context Addressed to the Children of Israel in the Prophet's ﷺ time, recalling their ancestors' covenant.
The covenant's core: worship Allah alone, do good to parents, relatives, orphans and the needy, speak well, pray and give zakah. The verse notes that a few kept it.
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot." Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
Context While Musa was away for forty nights (7:142), the Samiri cast the people's ornaments into the fire (20:87).
A lowing calf is hailed as "your god". The Quran asks how anything that cannot speak, harm or benefit could be worshipped.
Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, "Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.
Context Qarun was "from the people of Moses", a man of immense wealth.
His own people warn him not to exult. He credits his wealth to his own knowledge (28:78), and the earth swallows him and his home (28:81).
See it
His mother sets him afloat; Pharaoh's household takes him in.
28:7He strikes a man who dies, repents, and flees.
28:15-16He waters two women's flocks; years of work and marriage.
28:23-28Allah speaks to him and sends him to Pharaoh.
20:9-14Their tricks are swallowed; they fall down believing.
20:69-70The sea parts; Israel crosses and Pharaoh's army drowns.
26:63-66The Tablets are given; Harun leads in his place.
7:142-145The Samiri's calf; Musa returns angry and grieved.
20:85-97The mount raised over them: take the Torah firmly.
2:63Refusing to enter the land, they wander.
5:26Told to slaughter a cow, they question and delay.
2:67-71The proud rich man is swallowed by the earth.
28:81The order follows the Quran's accounts and common scholarly reading. The Quran does not say when in his life the cow or Qarun came, so they are marked undated.
The key word
mīthāq · A firm covenant, a binding pledge
From a root meaning to tie fast and to trust. The same root gives "the most trustworthy handhold" (2:256). The Quran uses mīthāq for the pledge with the Children of Israel (2:83), the covenant taken from the prophets (33:7), and even marriage, "a solemn covenant" (4:21).
2:8333:74:21A common mix-up
Harun made the golden calf.
In the Quran's account, the Samiri made the calf (20:85-88). Harun warned the people, "you are only being tested by it... follow me" (20:90), but they refused until Musa returned. When Musa seized him, Harun explained he had feared dividing the people (20:94). The Quran clears Harun of the idol.

Carry one verse
So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need."
