Day 3
Decree, Free Will and Suffering
If Allah has decreed everything, do my choices matter?
Day 3 · Decree, Free Will and Suffering
1 / 9Day 3
If Allah has decreed everything, do my choices matter?
Today
Muslims believe in qadar: that Allah knows, writes, wills and creates all that happens. The Quran says this plainly. It says just as plainly that people choose, and that they answer for what they choose.
The two truths sit side by side in the text. Scholars have discussed for centuries how they fit together. What the Quran gives is a way to live with them: act, choose well, trust Allah, and do not be crushed by loss or carried away by gain.
It also speaks about hardship. Some is a test (2:155), some follows from our own deeds (42:30), and some carries a wisdom we cannot yet see. The story of Musa and a servant of Allah shows that last kind.
What the Quran says
No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy - In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful -
Context From al-Hadid, a Madinan surah. Scholars explain the "register" as the Preserved Tablet.
Every disaster was known and written before it came. The reason given: so you neither despair over loss nor boast over gain.
Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing. Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.
Context The opening of al-Insan, which describes how each person is created.
Allah gives hearing, sight and a clear way. Whether a person becomes grateful or ungrateful is theirs to choose: that choice is the test.
It is not except a reminder to the worlds For whoever wills among you to take a right course. And you do not will except that Allah wills - Lord of the worlds.
Context The close of at-Takwir, a Makkan surah.
Human will is real: anyone may choose the right course. Yet no one wills outside Allah's will.
Most Sunni scholars say Allah creates all acts while people truly choose and are accountable; the Mu'tazilah said people create their own acts. Both rejected fatalism.
What comes to you of good is from Allah, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself. And We have sent you, [O Muhammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allah as Witness.
Context 4:78 answers people who credited good to Allah but blamed the Prophet ﷺ for misfortune.
Scholars reconcile the two verses: all things come by Allah's decree (4:78), but good is His grace, and harm traces back to our own deeds (42:30).
See it
He damages a boat that carried them.
18:71It belonged to poor people; a king seized every sound ship.
18:79He takes a boy's life, and Musa protests.
18:74Believing parents spared; a purer, kinder child in his place.
18:80-81Repaired for free in a town that refused them food.
18:77It hid two orphans' treasure until they came of age.
18:82Each act looked wrong to Musa. Each had a reason he could not see. The Quran calls the man "a servant from among Our servants" (18:65); the name al-Khidr comes from hadith in al-Bukhari.
The key word
qadar · Measure; decree
The root means to measure and to have power over. "All things We created with qadar": with measure, nothing random (54:49). The same root gives al-Qadir, the All-Powerful, and Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree.
54:4925:2A common mix-up
Belief in decree means our choices do not matter, so a person can blame fate for doing wrong.
The Quran quotes people who said "If Allah had willed, we would not have associated" and rejects that excuse as mere assumption (6:148). It holds each person to what they choose (18:29). Decree is Allah's knowledge and will over all things; it is something to trust after acting, not a reason to stop acting.
6:14818:29Remember
Carry one verse
No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah - He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things.
