Day 11 · Maryam and 'Isa
1 / 9Day 11
Who is Jesus in the Quran, and why is his mother so honoured?
Today
Maryam (Mary) is the only woman named in the Quran, and a whole surah carries her name. Her son 'Isa (Jesus) is called the Messiah, a word from Allah, and one of the greatest messengers. Muslims love and honour them both.
Today you will meet the family of 'Imran, Maryam's devotion in the place of prayer, the birth of 'Isa without a father, and his miracles by Allah's permission. You will also see what the Quran affirms about him and where it parts from Christian belief, with care for the verses Muslim scholars themselves read in different ways.
A sensitive topic. This lesson is a draft awaiting review by a qualified scholar; where readings differ, the main views are shown.
What the Quran says
And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds. O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."
Context Maryam grew up in the care of Zakariya, devoted to worship in her prayer chamber (3:37).
The angels tell her she is chosen and purified "above the women of the worlds". Her greatness is her devotion: bow and prostrate with those who bow.
[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."
Context Her people accused her when she returned with a baby, and she pointed to him (19:27-29).
The newborn speaks, and his first words are "I am the servant of Allah". He names his gifts: scripture, prophethood, prayer, and kindness to his mother.
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
Context Follows "a great slander" against Maryam (4:156).
The Quran denies that 'Isa was killed or crucified: it "was made to resemble him to them", and Allah raised him to Himself.
Most scholars read it as another man given his likeness, with 'Isa raised alive. A minority, citing 3:55, read a natural death and a raising in honour.
And indeed, Jesus will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.
Context From a passage calling 'Isa "a servant upon whom We bestowed favor" (43:59).
'Isa is tied to knowledge of the Hour. Many Muslims understand this as his return before the end.
Many scholars, following reports from Ibn 'Abbas, read it as his descent before the Hour, which hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim describe. Others read "it" as the Quran.
See it
Much of the left column is shared with Christians: the virgin birth, the Messiah, the miracles. The right column marks where the Quran parts ways, always insisting that 'Isa himself taught the worship of Allah alone (5:117).
The key word
ʿabd · Servant, worshipper of Allah
In the Quran, being Allah's ʿabd is the highest honour, not a lowering. It is the first thing 'Isa says of himself (19:30), and the Messiah would "never disdain" it (4:172). The Prophet ﷺ is called "His Servant" on the Night Journey (17:1). The same root gives ʿibādah, worship.
19:304:17217:1A common mix-up
Muslims do not believe in Jesus.
Believing in 'Isa as a prophet and the Messiah is part of Muslim faith. The Quran tells believers to say they believe in what was given to Moses and Jesus, making "no distinction between any of them" (2:136). Muslims honour 'Isa and Maryam deeply; they do not worship them.
2:1363:455:46Remember
Carry one verse
Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was.
