Who is the only woman the Quran calls by name?
Today
The Quran speaks to women and men side by side. Both are created from one soul (4:1), both are promised the same reward for faith and good deeds, and both are called to modesty. Many verses name "believing men and believing women" together, as allies of one another (9:71).
It also tells the stories of many women: mothers, queens, prophets' wives, and a woman who argued her case and was heard. Only one is named: Maryam, the mother of 'Isa. The others are known by their role; their names come from hadith and history. Laws on marriage and family come on Day 25. Today is about souls, examples and character.
A sensitive topic. This lesson is a draft awaiting review by a qualified scholar; where readings differ, the main views are shown.
What the Quran says
Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
Context Madinan. Reports say it came after women asked why the Quran seemed to address only men.
Ten qualities, each named for men and women alike, and one promise for both: forgiveness and a great reward.
Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.
Context Madinan. Reports name her Khawlah bint Tha'labah; her husband had cast her off with an old pagan formula called zihar.
A woman's argument with the Prophet ﷺ opens a surah. Allah heard her complaint, and the verses after it end that unjust custom (58:2-4).
And Allah presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the wrongdoing people." And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.
Context Madinan. They follow the wives of Nuh and Lut, given as examples of betrayal (66:10).
The models of faith for all believers, men included, are two women: Pharaoh's wife, steadfast under a tyrant, and Maryam, devout and chaste.
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
Context Madinan. The next verse gives women the same command, then adds covering and whom they may appear before.
Modesty is asked of men first: lower the gaze, guard chastity. It is a shared duty, not only a women's issue.
See it
Maryam shines brightest: the only woman named in the Quran, with a surah that carries her name. The others are known by their role; names such as Hawwa, Sarah and Asiya come from hadith and history.
The key word
zawj · Spouse; one of a pair
The Quran uses the same word for husband and wife: Adam is told to dwell in the Garden with his zawj (2:35). It also means a pair or match: "of all things We created two mates" (51:49). Each spouse is the other's counterpart, and between them Allah places affection and mercy (30:21).
2:3551:4930:21A common mix-up
The Quran blames Eve for the first sin.
The Quran tells the story of both together: Satan whispered to them both, they both ate, and they both repented (7:20-23). Where it names one, it names Adam: "Adam disobeyed his Lord" (20:121). It never blames the woman, never names her, and teaches that no soul carries another's burden (6:164).
7:20-2320:1216:164Remember
Carry one verse
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
