Day 19 · Signs of the Hour and Resurrection
1 / 9Day 19
If no one knows when the world ends, why does the Quran describe it so often?
Today
The Quran calls the end of this world as-Sā'ah, the Hour. It returns to it again and again, always with two notes: it is certain, and its time is hidden. Even the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was told to say that only Allah knows when it will come.
Some signs before it are named in the Quran: the moon split, Gog and Magog, a creature from the earth, a smoke. Others, such as the Dajjal (a great deceiver), come from hadith, the recorded sayings of the Prophet ﷺ. Then the universe itself comes undone, a horn is blown, and every person is raised. Today you will see what the Quran states, what hadith add, and where the order is simply not given.
What the Quran says
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival? Say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal its time except Him. It lays heavily upon the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except unexpectedly." They ask you as if you are familiar with it. Say, "Its knowledge is only with Allah, but most of the people do not know."
Context Makkan, from al-A'raf. A reply to people who kept asking the Prophet ﷺ for a date.
The answer is not a date but a refusal: only Allah knows, and it will come suddenly. 31:34 and 33:63 say the same.
And indeed, Jesus will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.
Context From az-Zukhruf, in a passage about 'Isa (Jesus) (43:57-65).
'Isa is tied to knowledge of the Hour; the verse does not say how.
Many scholars, following reports from Ibn 'Abbas, read it as 'Isa's return before the end, described in hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim. Others read it as his fatherless birth, or as the Quran itself.
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness] And when the stars fall, dispersing, And when the mountains are removed And when full-term she-camels are neglected And when the wild beasts are gathered And when the seas are filled with flame
Context One of the early Makkan surahs. Each line opens with "when"; the answer comes in 81:14.
Everything that seems permanent comes undone: the sun wrapped in darkness, stars falling, mountains moved, seas set aflame.
And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.
Context Makkan, from az-Zumar, which then follows people to their final groups (39:69-75).
The Horn is blown twice. The first ends all life, except whom Allah wills; the second raises everyone at once, standing and watching.

Stated (54:1). Most place it in the Prophet's ﷺ time.
54:1Stated (44:10). Some say a past famine; others, still to come.
44:10-11Explained: from hadith; not named in the Quran.
Explained from 43:61 and hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim.
43:61Stated (21:96): released, descending from every height.
21:96Stated (27:82): a creature from the earth speaks to people.
27:82Explained: hadith link it to 6:158; faith then comes too late.
6:158Stated (81:1-6): sun darkened, stars fall, seas aflame.
81:1-6Stated (39:68): all fall dead, except whom Allah wills.
39:68Stated (39:68): everyone stands, looking on.
39:68Stated (36:79): by the One who made them first.
36:79Signs named in the Quran or in hadith, each marked as stated or explained. The Quran gives no full order and hadith lists vary, so the sequence before the Hour itself is approximate.
The key word
as-sāʿah · The Hour
In everyday Arabic sāʿah is an hour or a short stretch of time. As a name for the end it carries suddenness: it comes "as a glance of the eye or even nearer" (16:77). When it arrives, people will swear they lived only an hour (30:55).
7:18730:55A common mix-up
Muslims can work out when the world will end by counting the signs.
The Quran says knowledge of the Hour is with Allah alone (7:187, 31:34). In a hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim, when Jibril asked the Prophet ﷺ about the Hour, he answered that the one asked knew no more than the one asking. The signs are reminders to prepare, not a calendar.

Carry one verse
Say, "He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing."
