Madinah: Building a Community

Day 14 · Madinah: Building a Community
1 / 10Day 14
How did a band of refugees become a community in ten years?
Today
In 622 CE the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions left Makkah for Yathrib, soon called Madinah, "the City". The emigrants, the Muhajirun, were taken in by the Muslims of Madinah, the Ansar or "Helpers". Reports say a written pact also bound the city's Jewish tribes to them as one community of defence.
The next ten years brought a new direction of prayer, battles and treaties, laws for daily life, and finally a peaceful return to Makkah. The Quran comments on these events as they happen, often without naming places or people. Today you will meet some of those moments, and the role the Quran gives the Prophet ﷺ himself: messenger, teacher and example.
A sensitive topic. This lesson is a draft awaiting review by a qualified scholar; where readings differ, the main views are shown.
What the Quran says
We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.
Context Madinah, about 16 or 17 months after the Hijra, reports in al-Bukhari say. Until then the Muslims prayed toward Jerusalem.
Allah turns the qiblah, the direction of prayer, to the Ka'bah in Makkah. Muslims everywhere have faced it ever since.
Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all; but Allah will reward the grateful.
Context Reports say it came after Uhud (3 AH), when a false cry that the Prophet ﷺ had been killed made some flee.
Faith rests on Allah, not on one man. Al-Bukhari reports that Abu Bakr recited this verse on the day the Prophet ﷺ died.
O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not see. And ever is Allah, of what you do, Seeing. [Remember] when they came at you from above you and from below you, and when eyes shifted [in fear], and hearts reached the throats and you assumed about Allah [various] assumptions. There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking.
Context The Battle of the Trench (5 AH): a large coalition besieged Madinah, which the Muslims defended by digging a trench.
The Quran names the fear honestly: eyes shifting, hearts in throats. Relief came through a wind and armies they did not see.
Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest
Context Al-Hudaybiyyah, 6 AH. Blocked from making 'Umrah, the believers pledged loyalty under a tree, then a truce was agreed.
A treaty many saw as a setback is called "a clear conquest" (48:1). Allah saw what was in their hearts and sent calm.
…This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. …
Context Part of a verse on food laws. 'Umar said it came down at 'Arafah during the Farewell Hajj, 10 AH (al-Bukhari, Muslim).
The religion is declared complete. A few months later, in 11 AH (632 CE), the Prophet ﷺ died in Madinah.
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
Context Madinah, as a community with leaders, disputes and laws took shape.
Obey Allah, the Messenger and those in authority, and take disputes back to Allah and the Messenger. Scholars read this, after his death, as returning to the Quran and the Sunnah.
See it

3:152A coalition besieges Madinah, then the siege breaks.
33:9A false charge against 'A'ishah; the Quran clears her.
24:11A pledge under the tree and a ten-year truce.
48:18The city is entered with little fighting; idols removed.
110:1Pride in numbers, a rout, then calm and victory.
9:25A hard march north in the summer heat.
9:117"This day I have perfected for you your religion."
5:3He dies in Madinah, aged about 63.
3:144AH counts years from the Hijra. Dates follow the main biographies of the Prophet ﷺ and are approximate; historians place some events, such as the Trench, a year apart.
The key word
sunnah · A way, an established practice
Literally a well-trodden path. The Quran speaks of sunnat Allah, Allah's unchanging way with past peoples (33:62). For Muslims, the Sunnah is the Prophet's ﷺ words, actions and approvals, preserved in hadith, which show how the Quran is lived (16:44).
33:6216:44A common mix-up
The Quran is complete, so Muslims need nothing else, not even the Prophet's example.
The Quran itself sends readers to him: obey the Messenger (4:80), take what he gives you (59:7), he makes clear what was revealed (16:44). It commands prayer but does not list its units or movements; those come from his practice. Scholars treat authentic Sunnah as the Quran's first explanation, while testing each report carefully.

Carry one verse
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.
