Day 28 · Justice, Authority, War and Peace
1 / 10Day 28
When does the Quran allow fighting, and what must never be done in it?
Today
Justice ('adl) runs through the whole Quran. Believers are told to stand firm for it even against themselves, their parents, or a people they dislike. Leaders are to return trusts, judge fairly and consult; those they lead are to obey within what is right.
Today also covers war, one of the most quoted and misquoted parts of the Quran. Its verses came in a real setting: a community persecuted in Makkah, driven from home, then attacked in Madinah. They permit fighting with conditions and limits, and they keep turning toward peace, treaties, and protection for anyone who asks.
The day ends with the "steep path" of freeing slaves. Where scholars past and present read these verses differently, their views are named.
A sensitive topic. This lesson is a draft awaiting review by a qualified scholar; where readings differ, the main views are shown.
What the Quran says
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
Context Madinah, addressed to believers as witnesses, in court and in daily life.
Justice comes first, even against yourself, your parents or relatives, rich or poor. 5:8 adds that hatred of a people must not make you unjust.
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
Context Follows 4:58: return trusts and judge with justice.
Obey Allah, the Messenger, and those in authority; every dispute goes back to Allah and His Messenger.
Some early scholars read "those in authority" as rulers (al-Tabari's preference), others as scholars; Ibn Kathir included both. All bound it: al-Bukhari and Muslim report obedience is only in what is right.
Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.
Context Many early scholars say this was the first verse to permit fighting, soon after the Hijra.
Permission is given to those attacked and wronged. 22:40: they were driven from home for saying "Our Lord is Allah", and such defence protects monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques.
Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors. And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers. And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Context Madinah, while Makkan forces still barred Muslims from the Ka'bah.
Fight only those who fight you, without excess; if they stop, you stop.
Ibn 'Abbas, as al-Tabari reports, read "do not transgress" as: kill no women, children, elderly or anyone offering peace, and held it binding. Some early scholars held it was widened by 9:36.
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Context Revealed after Badr. 8:62 adds that if they intend to deceive, Allah is enough.
If the enemy inclines to peace, incline to it too and rely on Allah.
Some early scholars, including Qatadah, held it was abrogated by later verses in surah 9; others, including Ibn Kathir, held it still applies whenever peace serves the community.
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? It is the freeing of a slave
Context Makkah, where many early believers were slaves; Abu Bakr freed several, Bilal among them.
The steep path of real virtue begins with freeing a slave. Later verses made it an expiation (4:92, 5:89, 58:3) and a use of zakah (9:60).

The key word
ʿadl · Justice; balance
To make level, like weights on an even scale. 'Adl gives each person their due; 16:90 pairs it with ihsan, giving more than is due. The Quran asks for it even toward people we dislike (5:8).
16:905:8A common mix-up
The Quran tells Muslims to fight all non-Muslims everywhere.
The Quran ties fighting to aggression, oppression and broken treaties (2:190, 4:75, 9:13), forbids attacking those who stay out and offer peace (4:90), and allows kindness to those who do not fight (60:8). Verses like 9:5 address the Arabian polytheists of that time, and 9:4 exempts those who kept their treaties. Classical jurists also allowed state-led wars of expansion; many modern scholars limit fighting to defence.

Carry one verse
Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
