Day 4 · The Unseen
1 / 9Day 4
What is real but hidden from our eyes?
Today
The Quran describes believers as those "who believe in the unseen" (2:3). In Arabic this is al-ghayb: what is real but hidden from our senses. Allah Himself, the angels, the jinn, the Throne, the Hereafter and the future all belong to it.
The Quran tells us some of this, and then stops. Angels bring revelation, record deeds and take souls. Jinn, made from fire, choose belief or disbelief as we do. Iblis, who refused to bow to Adam, was one of them.
Today also covers sorcery and the evil eye, which the Quran treats as real but never beyond Allah's permission. And it marks the limit: only Allah holds the keys of the unseen. Fortune-tellers claim what the Quran reserves for Him (27:65).
What the Quran says
And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].
Context From Qaf, a Makkan surah about death and resurrection. 82:10-12 calls these angels "noble and recording".
Two angels sit at the right and left of every person, recording; not one word is missed. And Allah is nearer still.
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an. It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.
Context The Prophet ﷺ learned of this by revelation, as the verse says. 46:29-32 also describes jinn listening to the Quran.
Jinn hear, understand and choose. This group heard the Quran, recognised its guidance and believed.
…It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. …
Context It clears Sulayman: sorcery came from devils, not from him.
Sorcery can harm, even between spouses, but only by Allah's permission. Learning it is tied to disbelief.
Most scholars read Harut and Marut as angels sent as a test; a minority read "two kings". Tales of their fall come from Jewish and Christian lore (Isra'iliyyat), not the Quran.
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
Context From al-An'am, a Makkan surah. 31:34 names five things only Allah knows, including the Hour and tomorrow.
The keys of the unseen are with Allah alone. His knowledge reaches every falling leaf, and all of it is in a clear record.
See it
Above all creation; the Most Merciful is established over it.
20:5Extends over the heavens and the earth.
2:255Where the honoured Quran is inscribed.
85:21-22The angel who brought the Quran to the Prophet's ﷺ heart.
2:97Winged messengers who never disobey Allah's command.
35:1Entrusted with taking each soul.
32:11Noble scribes who know whatever you do.
82:10-12Made from smokeless fire; the righteous and others among them.
55:15Iblis was of the jinn; his kind see us unseen.
18:50The Quran names each of these. Arranging them from the Throne down to the jinn and devils around us is a teaching aid, not an order the Quran gives.
The key word
ghayb · The unseen; what is hidden from the senses
From ghāba, to be absent or to set, as the sun does. The ghayb is not the imaginary; it is the real that is out of sight. Some of it Allah reveals to messengers He approves (72:26-27); its keys stay with Him alone (6:59).
2:372:26-27A common mix-up
Iblis was an angel who fell, and "jinn" is just another word for demons.
The Quran says Iblis "was of the jinn" (18:50) and was made from fire (7:12), while angels do not disobey (66:6). Most scholars take this at face value; some early commentators said he had lived among the angels. Jinn are not all evil either: "among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so" (72:11).
18:5072:11Remember
Carry one verse
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected."
