Day 18
Death and Barzakh

Day 18 · Death and Barzakh
1 / 9Day 18
What happens between our last breath and the Day of Resurrection?
Today
"Every soul will taste death" (3:185). The Quran speaks of this moment plainly but gently: angels take the soul, the truth a person avoided becomes clear (50:19), and the good are greeted with "Peace be upon you" (16:32).
After death comes the barzakh, a barrier or in-between stage that lasts until the Resurrection. Here the Quran says very little, and that matters. Much of what people describe about the grave, its questions and its angels, comes from hadith rather than the Quran. Today you will practise telling apart where the Quran speaks, where hadith explains, and where both stay silent.
What the Quran says
Then why, when the soul at death reaches the throat And you are at that time looking on - And Our angels are nearer to him than you, but you do not see - Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed, Bring it back, if you should be truthful?
Context From al-Waqi'ah, a Makkan surah answering deniers of the Resurrection.
Family look on helplessly; no one can bring the soul back. Life is not ours to keep.
The Arabic says "We are nearer to him". Many scholars, including Ibn Kathir, read "We" as the angels, as here; others read it as Allah's nearness in knowledge.
[For such is the state of the disbelievers], until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
Context From al-Mu'minun: at death, one who wasted life begs to be sent back.
The Quran names the stage after death, a barrier until the Resurrection, and says almost nothing of what it is like. The details come from hadith.
So Allah protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment - The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
Context From the story of the believer in Pharaoh's court, whom Allah protected from their plots.
Pharaoh's people are shown the Fire morning and evening, before the Hour arrives. Scholars cite this as evidence that reward or punishment begins in the barzakh.
And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision, Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them - that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
Context Madinan, after the losses at Uhud (3 AH).
Those killed in Allah's cause are not dead but alive with their Lord, provided for and rejoicing. How, we do not perceive (2:154).

Every soul tastes it; angels take the soul.
3:185A barrier until the Day of raising.
23:100The Horn is blown; people rise from the graves.

99:7-8A party in Paradise, a party in the Blaze.
42:7Five stages the Quran describes. You are at the second, the barzakh: a stage the Quran names but hardly describes.
The key word
barzakh · A barrier between two things
The Quran uses it for the unseen barrier that keeps two seas from overrunning each other (55:20) and for the stage between death and the Resurrection (23:100). The two meet: the dead are close to us yet kept apart, until the Day they are raised.
23:10055:19-20A common mix-up
The Quran describes in detail the two angels who question the dead in the grave.
The Quran names the barzakh (23:100) and hints at what happens there (40:46). Al-Bukhari and Muslim report the Prophet ﷺ linking 14:27, "Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word", to the questioning in the grave. Other details, including the angels' names Munkar and Nakir, come from further hadith reports, not the Quran.
