Day 5 · Humanity

Why are we here, and what are we made of?
Today
Before Adam was created, Allah told the angels He would place on earth a khalifah, a successor or steward (2:30). The angels asked why. The answer was that Allah knows what they do not.
The Quran then tells the human story: shaped from clay, given a natural pull toward its Creator, honoured above much of creation (17:70), and entrusted with a trust the mountains refused (33:72). It is honest about our weakness too. Adam forgot and slipped, then turned back and was forgiven.
Today you will also see how the Quran describes the self: a soul that can urge wrong, blame itself, and finally find peace. Life, it says, is a test of which of us is best in deed (67:2).
What the Quran says
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."
Context The opening of the human story, in al-Baqarah, a Madinan surah.
Humans were planned for the earth before Adam existed. The angels' worry is answered with Allah's knowledge, not dismissed.
Some scholars read khalifah as people succeeding one another on earth; others as a steward entrusted by Allah to govern it by His guidance.
And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.
Context From al-Mu'minun, a Makkan surah. A hadith of Ibn Mas'ud in al-Bukhari and Muslim adds that the soul is breathed in later.
Clay, then a drop, a clinging clot, a lump, bones clothed in flesh, then "another creation": a full human being.
So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.
Context A Makkan surah. A hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim says every child is born upon the fitrah.
People are created with an inclination toward their Creator and the truth. Faith is a return to that nature, not something foreign to it.
And Adam and his wife ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred. Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].
Context From Taha. 7:23 records the couple's words: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves."
Adam and his wife both ate, and Adam erred. Then Allah chose him, turned to him and guided him. The first human slip ends in forgiveness.
See it
An-nafs al-mutma'innah: called home, well-pleased and pleasing.
89:27-28An-nafs al-lawwamah: it reproaches itself after doing wrong.
75:2An-nafs al-ammarah: it pushes toward evil, unless Allah shows mercy.
12:53Each phrase is in the Quran. Many scholars read them as states one soul moves through, from the bottom up, not as three separate souls.
The key word
fiṭrah · The original nature Allah created people with
From faṭara, to split open or bring into being: Allah is Fāṭir, Originator of the heavens and the earth (35:1). Fitrah is the pull toward one's Creator that exists before any teaching. Upbringing can cover it, but it is not erased.
30:3035:1A common mix-up
Humans are born guilty because of Adam's sin.
In the Quran, Adam and his wife both slipped and both repented (7:23), and Allah accepted Adam's repentance (2:37). No soul carries another's burden (6:164), and every child is born upon the fitrah. The Quran does not blame Eve alone; it speaks of the two of them. Life on earth was planned before the slip (2:30).
