Rabbana duas are supplications in the Quran that begin with Rabbana, Arabic for "Our Lord." The traditional collection known as the "40 Rabbana duas" gathers forty of these prayers from 36 verses, said by prophets, believers and angels. They cover forgiveness, guidance, family, patience and Paradise, and Muslims recite them in prayer and at any time.
Because these prayers are the words of the Quran itself, many Muslims see them as the surest way to ask: God taught the words and then recorded them. This page lists every Rabbana dua with a link to its verse, grouped by theme, then adds the personal duas of the prophets, which mostly begin Rabbi, "My Lord."
Key takeaways
- Rabbana (ربنا) means "Our Lord." Rabb means the Lord who creates, nurtures and sustains, and -na means "our."
- By Quran Universe's count of the Arabic text, the word rabbana appears 72 times in 64 verses. 41 of those verses are prayers by prophets, believers or angels; the other 23 are pleas from people who rejected the truth, mostly on the Day of Judgment.
- The traditional "40 Rabbana duas" come from 36 verses, because 2:286 contains three duas and 3:193 and 59:10 contain two each.
- The Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) most frequent dua was "Our Lord, give us in this world good and in the Hereafter good," from Quran 2:201, according to Sahih al-Bukhari 6389.
- Surah Ali 'Imran contains more Rabbana duas than any other surah: ten of the forty.
What does Rabbana mean?
Rabbana (rabbana, ربنا) joins two parts. Rabb (rabb) is usually translated "Lord," but the Arabic is richer: it describes the one who brings something into being, cares for it and raises it step by step to completion. The suffix -na means "our." So Rabbana is a plural, shared address: "Our Lord, who made us and looks after us."
The Quran uses three common openings for prayer:
| Opening | Meaning | Typical use in the Quran |
|---|---|---|
| Rabbana | Our Lord | Prayers made by or for a group, such as believers, families or the companions of a prophet |
| Rabbi | My Lord | Personal prayers of individual prophets, such as Musa and Zakariyya |
| Allahumma | O Allah | Rare in the Quran; Isa combines it as "O Allah, our Lord" in 5:114 |
Many Rabbana duas also end by naming God, for example "Indeed, You are the Bestower" (al-Wahhab) in 3:8, or "You are the Hearing, the Knowing" in 2:127. Ending a dua with a fitting name is a practice scholars recommend. You can read about these names at Al-Wahhab, As-Sami' and Al-Mujib, the Responder to prayer.
How we built this list
Quran Universe searched the full Arabic text of the Quran for every occurrence of the word rabbana, with its vowel marks, so that the related forms rabbuna and rabbina ("our Lord" in other grammatical positions) were excluded. That gave 72 occurrences in 64 verses. We then read each verse to separate prayers from other speech, and checked the result against the widely circulated "40 Rabbana duas" collection.
Every one of the traditional forty appears in our results. Five more verses contain a Rabbana prayer by believers but are usually left out of the forty; they are marked "Extra" in the tables below. Verse numbers follow the standard Hafs numbering used on Quran Universe. All translations are Sahih International.
All the Rabbana duas by theme
The "No." column gives each dua's place in the traditional list of forty. Where a verse is long, only the prayer itself is quoted.

Ten of the forty come from Surah Ali 'Imran and seven from Surah al-Baqarah, so these two surahs alone hold more than 40 percent of the list. Many Muslims recite one Rabbana dua each night of Ramadan, or use them in the last sitting of prayer before the closing salam.
Who else says "Rabbana" in the Quran?
Not every "Our Lord" in the Quran is a model prayer. Of the 64 verses containing rabbana, 23 record the words of people who rejected the truth. The Quran quotes them as warnings.
| Context | Verses |
|---|---|
| Pleas on the Day of Judgment or in the Fire (16 verses) | 6:128, 7:38, 14:44, 16:86, 23:106, 23:107, 28:63, 32:12, 33:67, 33:68, 35:37, 38:61, 40:11, 41:29, 44:12, 50:27 |
| Words said, or that would be said, in this world (7 verses) | 2:200, 4:77, 20:134, 25:21, 28:47, 34:19, 38:16 |
The contrast is the lesson. The prayer of the believers in 2:201 asks for good in both worlds. The verse just before it, 2:200, describes a person who says only "Our Lord, give us in this world," and "he will have in the Hereafter no share." The same two words can open a wise prayer or a short-sighted one. Likewise, many pleas to "return us" to the world (32:12, 35:37) come too late, which is why the Quran records them: to be heeded now.
Prophets' duas in the Quran
Most personal prayers of the prophets open with Rabbi, "My Lord." Together they form a second collection Muslims use as often as the forty. For each prophet's story, see our guide to the prophets in the Quran.

| Nuh (Noah) | 54:10 | "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help." |
| Ibrahim (Abraham) | 2:126 | "My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits." |

| Muhammad | 17:80 | "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority." |
The duas listed for the Prophet Muhammad are ones the Quran commands him to say ("And say..."), so Muslims treat them as taught prayers. The dua of Yunus is the subject of a well-known hadith on answered prayer, covered in our guide to the dua for anxiety and stress.
Two women's prayers are also recorded. The mother of Maryam dedicated her unborn child to God: "My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb... so accept this from me" (3:35). The believing wife of Pharaoh prayed, "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise" (66:11), a dua many Muslims use when asking for Jannah.
Quranic duas for parents and for Jannah
Two of the most searched-for duas are scattered across the lists above, so here they are side by side.
| Need | Verse | Dua |
|---|---|---|
| Parents | 17:24 | "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small." |
| Parents | 14:41 | "Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established." |
| Parents | 71:28 | "My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer." |
| Parents and children | 46:15 | "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring." |
| Jannah | 66:11 | "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise." |
| Jannah | 26:85 | "And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure." (Ibrahim) |
| Jannah | 3:194 | "Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers." |
How to use the Rabbana duas
There is no fixed rule for when to recite them. These are the common practices:
- In prayer. Many Muslims add a Rabbana dua in the final sitting after the tashahhud, before ending with salam. Rabbana atina (2:201) is the most common choice.
- One a night. The forty fit neatly into Ramadan, one per night, with a few to spare for the last ten nights.
- For a specific need. Use the theme tables: 25:74 for family, 3:8 for steadfastness, 2:250 before a difficult task.
- With understanding. Read the verse in context first. Knowing who said it, and why, changes how it feels to say.
Of course, any dua can be made in your own words and language. The Quran's duas are a model, not a limit. For prophetic duas for each part of the day, see our guide to daily duas. The Quran's opening chapter is itself a dua, "Guide us to the straight path," explained in Surah al-Fatihah meaning.

Every verse link on this page opens the verse on Quran Universe with its Arabic text, word-by-word meaning, transliteration and Tafsir Ibn Kathir. A good place to start is Surah Ali 'Imran 3:190-194, the passage that holds five of the forty duas, or the closing verses of Surah al-Baqarah.
Frequently asked questions
How many Rabbana duas are in the Quran?
The traditional collection has 40 Rabbana duas drawn from 36 verses. By Quran Universe's count of the Arabic text, the word rabbana appears 72 times in 64 verses. Of those, 41 verses are prayers by prophets, believers or angels, and 23 record pleas from people who rejected the truth. Five believers' prayers with rabbana are usually left out of the forty.
What does Rabbana mean?
Rabbana means "Our Lord" in Arabic. Rabb refers to the Lord who creates, nurtures and sustains, and -na means "our." Prayers that begin with Rabbana are usually made by or for a group, while personal prayers in the Quran often begin with Rabbi, "My Lord."
What is the most famous Rabbana dua?
"Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar," from Quran 2:201: "Our Lord, give us in this world good and in the Hereafter good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." According to Sahih al-Bukhari 6389, it was the Prophet Muhammad's most frequent dua.
What is the Quranic dua for parents?
The best-known is Quran 17:24: "Rabbir hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira," meaning "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small." Another is Ibrahim's dua in 14:41: "Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established." Prophet Nuh made a similar dua in 71:28.
Is there a dua for Jannah in the Quran?
Yes. The wife of Pharaoh prayed, "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise" (Quran 66:11). Ibrahim asked to be among "the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure" (26:85), and the people of understanding asked God to grant what He promised through His messengers (3:194). The angels also pray for believers to enter Paradise in 40:8.
Can I recite Rabbana duas in salah?
Yes. Scholars agree that Quranic duas may be recited in the final sitting of the prayer, after the tashahhud and before salam. Some schools, such as the Hanafi school, prefer duas whose wording resembles the Quran or authentic hadith in obligatory prayers, which the Rabbana duas satisfy. Rabbana atina (2:201) is the most commonly used.
