Day 20
Judgment
What happens when every deed, even the smallest, is placed on the scale?
Day 20 · Judgment
1 / 9Day 20
What happens when every deed, even the smallest, is placed on the scale?
Today
After the Horn and the raising comes the reckoning. The Quran shows it in many scenes: people gathered in groups, books of deeds laid open, hands and feet speaking, scales set up, and each person suddenly alone with what they brought.
Two promises run through every scene. Nothing is lost, not even an atom's weight of good. And no one is wronged. Today you will meet the records, the witnesses and the scales, see what the Quran says about intercession (pleading on someone's behalf), and look at a verse scholars read in different ways: 19:71, often linked to the bridge called the Sirat.
What the Quran says
And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open. [It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant."
Context Makkan, from al-Isra. Scholars explain the "fate upon his neck" as a person's own deeds, bound to them.
Each person receives their own record, spread open, and is told to read it. They become their own accountant.
That Day, We will seal over their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to earn.
Context Makkan, from Ya-Sin, about those who denied the meeting with Allah. 41:20-21 adds hearing, eyes and skin.
When words can no longer hide anything, the body speaks. The hands and feet that did the deeds bear witness to them.
And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.
Context Makkan, from al-Anbiya. 7:8-9 and 101:6-9 speak of scales that are heavy or light.
Justice is exact: even a mustard seed's weight of deeds is brought forward, and no soul is wronged at all.
And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed. Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
Context From Maryam, after verses on doubters of the resurrection (19:66-70).
Everyone "comes to" Hell, and then the God-fearing are saved from it.
Some early scholars read "come to it" as entering it, with believers unharmed. Many others, linking it to hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim on a bridge over Hell, read it as crossing that bridge, the Sirat.

42:7The journey the Quran describes after this life. Today is the Judgment: records are read, limbs testify, and deeds are weighed.
The key word
mīzān · Scale, balance
From wazana, to weigh. The same word names the balance Allah set in creation, which people must not upset (55:7-9). For the Day the Quran often uses the plural, mawāzīn: "those whose scales are heavy" (7:8). Most Sunni scholars take it as a real scale; some read it as perfect justice.
7:855:7-9A common mix-up
On Judgment Day, a relative or a holy person can carry your sins or save you, whatever you did.
No soul carries another's burden, "even if he should be a close relative" (35:18). People will even flee their own families (80:34-37). Intercession is real, but only by one the Most Merciful permits and whose word He accepts (20:109). Hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim describe the Prophet ﷺ interceding only after Allah gives leave.
35:1880:34-3720:109Remember
Carry one verse
So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.
