Day 23
Mercy, Repentance and the Heart
Is there any sin too heavy to bring back to Allah?
Day 23 · Mercy, Repentance and the Heart
1 / 9Day 23
Is there any sin too heavy to bring back to Allah?
Today
After the scenes of the Hereafter, the Quran turns back to the reader with good news: the door is still open. "Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy" (6:54). Tawbah, repentance, simply means turning back to Allah, and He calls Himself the One who turns toward those who turn.
Today is about that return and the heart it heals. You will see that no sin is too great to bring back, that sins can even become good, what makes repentance real, and why no one may declare themselves pure. The Quran's medicine for a restless heart is short: the remembrance of Allah.
What the Quran says
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.
Context Makkan, from az-Zumar. Reports say it reassured people who feared their past was beyond forgiving.
Addressed to those who have wronged themselves: do not despair. Allah forgives all sins for those who return to Him while there is time.
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.
Context Madinan, from Al 'Imran, describing people promised forgiveness and gardens (3:133-136).
Repentance has a shape: remembering Allah, asking His forgiveness, and not persisting knowingly. And "who can forgive sins except Allah?"
Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
Context Follows the gravest sins: worshipping others, killing and adultery (25:68-69).
Those who repent, believe and do good find their evil deeds replaced with good.
Some read this as Allah turning bad deeds into good ones in this life. Others, citing a hadith in Muslim, read it as past sins rewritten as good deeds on the Day. Many accept both.
Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.
Context Makkan, from an-Najm, describing those who do good (53:31).
Allah is "vast in forgiveness" and knew us before we were born. So no one should claim to be pure; He alone knows who is truly mindful of Him.

Remember Allah when you slip
3:135Leave the wrong now, not later
4:17Feel sorrow for what was done
Seek forgiveness from Allah directly
4:110Intend not to return to it
3:135Return what is owed to people you wronged
Let good deeds follow the bad
11:114Scholars draw these conditions from verses like 3:135 and 4:17 and from hadith. When a wrong harmed someone, most add making it right with them. The door stays open until death has come (4:18).
The key word
tawbah · Repentance; turning back
From t-w-b, to return. The Quran uses it both ways: the servant turns back to Allah, and Allah turns to the servant. "Then He turned to them so they could repent" (9:118): His turning comes first. At-Tawwāb, the One who keeps accepting repentance, is one of His names (2:37).
9:1182:37A common mix-up
To be forgiven, you must confess your sins to another person or go through a religious official.
The Quran asks, "who can forgive sins except Allah?" (3:135), and Allah says, "I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me" (2:186). Tawbah is between a person and Allah, with no go-between. Where a sin wronged someone, scholars add that their rights must be restored.

Carry one verse
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."
