Day 22 · Paradise
1 / 9Day 22
What could be greater than a garden with rivers of milk and honey?
Today
The Quran describes Paradise, al-Jannah, in the language of gardens: shade, flowing rivers, fruit hanging low, no burning sun and no bitter cold. To people who first heard it in a dry land, these were the clearest pictures of a home without want.
Yet it also says the reality is beyond description: "no soul knows what has been hidden for them" (32:17). And its greatest gifts are not physical at all: hearts cleared of resentment, a greeting of peace, Allah's approval, and the sight of their Lord. Today you will see the four rivers, the ranks and gates, and what is promised beyond the gardens.
What the Quran says
Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?
Context Madinan, from Surah Muhammad. The verse ends by contrasting the drink of the Fire.
Four rivers, each a perfected form of something known: water never stale, milk unchanging, wine that delights, honey made pure. And with them, forgiveness.
Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs. [Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]." And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other. No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.
Context Makkan, from al-Hijr, right after the warning of Hell's seven gates (15:43-44).
Paradise begins in the heart: every resentment is removed, and people sit as brothers facing each other, never tired, never sent away.
Allah has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence; but approval from Allah is greater. It is that which is the great attainment.
Context Madinan, from at-Tawbah. It names believing men and believing women together.
Gardens, rivers and fine homes are promised, then the verse lifts higher: "approval from Allah is greater." That is the great attainment.
[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, Looking at their Lord.
Context Makkan, from al-Qiyamah. A hadith in Muslim explains the "extra" of 10:26 as this sight.
Radiant faces, looking at their Lord.
Most scholars, with hadith in al-Bukhari and Muslim, take this as a real seeing of Allah. The Mu'tazilah, an early theological school, read "looking at" as looking to, awaiting their Lord's reward.

56:19Honey, purified
47:1547:15 names four rivers in Paradise, each a perfected form of a drink known here. A hadith in al-Bukhari adds that the rivers of Paradise spring from al-Firdaws, its highest part.
The key word
jannah · Garden; Paradise
From j-n-n, to cover or hide. A jannah is a garden so thick with trees that the ground is hidden. The same root gives jinn, beings hidden from sight, and janīn, a child hidden in the womb. Paradise is a garden whose fullness is still hidden from us (32:17).
47:1532:17A common mix-up
Paradise in Islam is only about physical pleasures, and mainly for men.
The Quran promises Paradise to "believing men and believing women" alike (9:72, 33:35). Its pleasures are real, but it calls Allah's approval greater, removes resentment from hearts (15:47), and speaks of a joy no soul can picture (32:17). The highest gift, most scholars hold, is seeing Allah (75:23).

Carry one verse
And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.
