Why does the Quran give more detail on family than on almost anything else?
Today
Most Quranic law comes as broad principles. Family life is different. Here the Quran goes into detail: the bridal gift, steps for a marriage in trouble, waiting periods after divorce, nursing, and exact shares of inheritance. Many of these verses protect the person easiest to wrong at home: the wife, the orphan, the child, the ageing parent.
It also ended old customs. A man could abandon his wife by calling her "like my mother's back" (zihar, 58:1-4), and an adopted child was treated as a blood child in law. The Quran rejected both, while calling adopted children brothers in faith (33:4-5).
These verses are the starting point. Islamic law (fiqh) builds on them with the Sunnah and centuries of scholarship, and real cases belong with a qualified scholar or court. Where scholars read a verse differently, you will see that too.
A sensitive topic. This lesson is a draft awaiting review by a qualified scholar; where readings differ, the main views are shown.
What the Quran says
And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
Context Part of a Makkan list of Allah's signs, beside creation, languages and sleep.
Marriage is presented as a sign of Allah: spouses made from one another, for tranquillity, with affection and mercy placed between them.
And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice].
Context 'A'ishah, in al-Bukhari, explains it was about guardians who wanted to marry orphan girls in their care without a fair bridal gift.
Up to four wives is allowed only with justice; a man who fears he cannot be fair marries one. 4:129 adds that no wife may be left neglected.
Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.
Context On marital breakdown; arbitration follows in 4:35.
Men's charge is tied to providing. If a wife's serious defiance (nushuz) is feared: advise, separate beds, then a last step.
Classical jurists allowed only a light tap that does no harm; al-Shafi'i judged it better avoided. Some modern scholars read "daraba" as "separate". Muslim reports the Prophet ﷺ never struck a woman.
And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Acquainted [with all things].
Context Follows directly on 4:34, for when the couple's own efforts have not been enough.
Each family sends an arbitrator, and if they seek reconciliation, Allah will bring it about. 4:128 likewise says that settlement is best.
Divorce is twice. Then, either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allah. But if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. …
Context Scholars say it ended a custom of divorcing and taking back a wife endlessly. 2:228 sets a waiting period of three cycles.
A revocable divorce may happen twice; then keep her kindly or part kindly. A wife may also end the marriage by giving back her bridal gift (khul').
Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one's estate. And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one's parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. …
Context Arab custom often left women and young children with nothing; here their shares are fixed.
Shares are set by Allah, not by the strongest relative: sons and daughters two to one, fixed fractions for daughters, a sixth for each parent.

Simplified examples from 4:11-12, divided after debts and any bequest. Real estates often involve more heirs and further rules from the Sunnah; ask a qualified scholar.
The key word
mawaddah · Loving affection
Love that shows itself in warmth and care, not only a feeling. 30:21 pairs it with rahmah, mercy: some commentators say affection draws a couple together and mercy keeps them together when affection is tested. The same root gives al-Wadud, the Loving (85:14).
30:2185:14A common mix-up
In Islamic inheritance a woman always receives half of what a man receives.
The two-to-one ratio applies in certain cases, such as sons and daughters (4:11) and full siblings (4:176). When there are children, a mother and father each take a sixth (4:11), and half-siblings through the mother share equally (4:12). Scholars link the larger shares to the man's duty to provide, while a woman's own wealth and bridal gift stay hers alone.

Carry one verse
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."
