Why is the longest verse in the Quran about a debt?
Today
The Quran does not treat wealth as dirty. Trade is lawful, honest earning is honourable, and the Prophet ﷺ himself traded as a merchant before his mission. But money is also where people are most tempted to take what is not theirs.
So the Quran guards every step: how wealth is earned (no riba, no cheating, no bribery), how it is recorded (debts written and witnessed), and how it is used (no hoarding, no waste, and a share for others). Wealth is held in trust: Allah made us successors over it (57:7).
Riba, often translated as usury or interest, was forbidden in stages. Today you will trace those stages and see why the Quran insists that trade and riba are not the same thing.
What the Quran says
O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.
Context Madinah. Ibn 'Abbas is reported in al-Bukhari as saying the verse on riba was the last revealed.
Believers must drop any interest still owed to them and keep only their principal: no one wrongs and no one is wronged. 2:275 adds that Allah permitted trade and forbade riba.
O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And let a scribe write [it] between you in justice. …
Context The longest verse in the Quran, placed right after the verses on riba.
Write down every debt with a term, small or large, through a fair scribe and with witnesses. The verse says this is more just and prevents doubt between people.
Woe to those who give less [than due], Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full. But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
Context Opens al-Mutaffifin, "those who give short measure", a surah named after cheating in the market.
Woe to those who demand full measure for themselves but short-change others. 83:4-6 reminds them that they will stand before the Lord of the worlds.
And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful. And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word. And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
Context Part of the moral code of al-Isra, revealed in Makkah.
Give relatives, the poor and travellers their right, and do not waste. If you cannot give, speak gently. Keep the balance: no hand chained to the neck, nor stretched out until nothing is left.

Makkah: interest does not grow with Allah; zakah multiplies.
30:39Some of the Children of Israel took it though it was forbidden.
4:161First direct ban for believers. Most scholars: "doubled" describes, not limits.
3:130Trade allowed, riba forbidden; keep your principal, wrong no one.
2:275-279Give a struggling debtor time; forgiving the debt is better.
2:280A common scholarly reading of the riba verses as a gradual path, like the stages on alcohol. The dating of the middle steps is approximate.
The key word
ribā · Increase; usury
Literally growth, from the same root as rabwah, a hill that rises (23:50). In law it is a gain stipulated on a loan and, from hadith, certain unequal swaps of like goods. The Quran turns the word around: Allah destroys riba and makes charity grow (yurbī, 2:276).
2:27630:39A common mix-up
Islam disapproves of wealth and of making money.
Trade by mutual consent is lawful (4:29), and the Prophet ﷺ was a trader before his mission. What the Quran forbids is unjust gain: riba, bribery (2:188), cheating, and hoarding that withholds what is due (9:34). It praises those who spend by night and day (2:274) and calls our wealth something we hold as successors (57:7).
4:292:18857:7Remember
Carry one verse
And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate
